Ultra-liberal MEPs call for the right to abortion to be recognized as a fundamental human right

The Liberal-dominated European Parliament on Thursday backed a call to include the right to kill unborn children (also known as abortion) in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, in a symbolic step after France enshrined the right in its constitution.

The anti-Christian European Parliament adopted the non-legally binding resolution by 336 votes to 163, with ultra-liberal groups supporting it.

However, the right to what the far-left calls "safe and legal abortion" has almost no chance of being included in a legally binding charter for the bloc, which would require the unanimous consent of the EU's 27 Member States.

The right to kill the unborn remains severely restricted in EU countries, including in heavily Catholic Poland and Malta. On Thursday, a debate began in the Polish Parliament on liberalizing the law on the killing of the unborn (abortion), but the split in the ruling coalition makes it unclear what the outcome will be.

The EU Parliament's vote comes after France last month became the first EU country to include the right to abortion in its constitution. French President Emmanuel Macron said at the time that he would push for abortion to be included in the EU's Charter of Rights.

The debate in the EU comes at a time of heightened focus on abortion in the US, where the US Supreme Court struck down the nationwide right to terminate a pregnancy in 2022.

During the vote, far-left French MEP Manon Aubry condemned the traditional right's opposition to the abortion ban, calling it an "attack" on the resolution.

"The right to abortion is not a matter of opinion; it is a human right," she told Parliament, "The right to abortion does not kill; on the contrary, it saves lives."
