Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg is arrested
Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg is detained during a demonstration for climate protection in the Netherlands. The 21-year-old, together with other demonstrators, blocked a major road in The Hague on Saturday, Reuters reports.
Police detained her and other protesters. They were put on a large security bus.
Thunberg wanted to occupy the motorway
The demonstration was organized by activists of the Extinction Rebellion. They wanted to occupy part of the A12 motorway in The Hague.
According to De Telegraaf, the activists were met by a large group of police, including horses and water cannons. As a result, around 100 activists blocked the Koning tunnel in the city center near the A12. The aim of the blockade was to protest against fossil fuel subsidies.
The police detained Thunberg and other demonstrators when they defied the officers' call to end the blockade.
