Natural phenomena prove more interesting than pornography to US citizens

Last Monday, a total solar eclipse occurred in fifteen US states, leaving some 44 million people without "light" for a while. When the moon covered the sun, parts of North America were plunged into total darkness for four minutes. On this special day, there were also many people browsing adult websites, but the administrators of the websites recorded a drop in the number of visitors.

According to a survey conducted by PornHub, many people spent time on pornographic websites on this special day, but the eclipse had a significant impact on their website traffic, with an increase in eclipse-related searches.

Among other things, internet users searched for the following words: solar eclipse, sex during a solar eclipse, and eclipse glasses. They said that the figures prove that the eclipse put people in a special mood, reports TMZ.

According to PornHub, the number of searches peaked on Monday, with a 68% increase. There were a few home movies made on the day, but interestingly, there was a drop in human activity during the eclipse[1].

According to a spokesperson, website traffic during the eclipse was 68 percent lower than the average in Maine and Ohio, while in New Hampshire and Vermont, it was down 67 percent.

So it seems that most people chose the total eclipse over the porn sites.

The next total solar eclipse will occur in the United States in 2044.

PornHub is one of the most successful obscenity projects

PornHub[2] is a Canadian online porn video-sharing site, one of several owned by the adult entertainment conglomerate Aylo. February 2024. "PornHub was the 13th most visited website in the world and the second most visited adult website after XVideos.

Visitors to the site can view pornographic videos in a variety of categories, including professional and amateur pornography, and upload and share their videos. Content may be flagged if it violates the site's terms of service. The site also hosts the annual PornHub Awards.

In December 2020, following a New York Times report on pornography and non-consensual sex trafficking, payment processors Mastercard and Visa stopped providing their services to the PornHub platform. PornHub then removed all videos uploaded by unapproved users and reduced the total content from 13 million to 4 million videos. The 2023 documentary "Money Shot: The Pornhub Story" includes a documentary opposing PornHub and a critical stance by some pornographic performers.

Pornography did not originate today

Pornography (Gr. πορνογράφος - "describing prostitutes") is the intimate depiction or description of a sexual encounter, the human body, with the aim of arousing sexual arousal. It differs from erotica in that it is violent and dehumanizing.

The term was originally used to describe various aspects of the lives of prostitutes in Ancient Greece, and was introduced in the 18th century with the publication in France of Retif de la Breton's The Pornographer, or a Decent Man's Reflections on the Real Immorality of Prostitution. The book dealt with issues considered obscene in society at the time, which is why the term pornography has come to symbolize obscene sexuality.

These days, the legal status of pornography is limited by the law of each country. In Lithuania, the production and distribution of pornography is legally prohibited. Lithuanian law also prohibits the viewing and transmission of pornography to children and adolescents under the age of 18, regardless of type or availability.

Current pornography is generally understood as visual or descriptive works in which the viewer's attention is deliberately drawn to the sexual organs depicted or described, usually during sex. Whereas eroticism shows a person with a sensual component, pornography essentially depersonalizes the person depicted, leaving only the acts of sexual intercourse, which are shown in detail, often with all the anatomical and physiological details. However, pornography does not include visual or verbal information contained in publications of a scientific or educational nature, including the depiction of sexual positions.

A distinction is made between so-called 'soft pornography', which simply depicts sex scenes, and 'hard pornography', which includes perversion, sexual abuse, bullying etc. Many people are first exposed to pornography at the onset of puberty. Pornography can hurt the psyche of adolescents, leading to tolerance of sexual abuse and various sexual deviations. There are views that soft pornography can be useful for young people as a primary source of knowledge about sex. Pornography can reduce interest in romantic relationships. Pornography addiction occurs when the user loses a job, loses a partner, or is unable to get naturally aroused by its indiscriminate use.

Pornography began to spread with the advent of photography and cinematography. In the 1980s, during the sexual revolution in the Western world, pornography began to spread more rapidly after Playboy started to compete with more salacious publications such as Penthouse, which depicted women's bodies and their genitals without pubic hair. Later, the industry's growth was fueled by the proliferation of the video production business, the emergence of adult television channels and DVD sales, and the emergence of the Internet, its increasing penetration and speed.

In countries where it is legal to distribute pornography, there is an age limit for admission to places containing pornographic material (including Internet sites). It is estimated that around one-third of all information on the internet is pornography. One of the largest companies distributing this type of content online is MindGeek. It owns the hugely popular PornHub website. Its distribution of mostly free content, as well as amateur content and various excerpts from adult films, is believed to have led to a decline in the salaries of porn actors, the collapse of film studios, and the concentration of pornography in a few companies. To survive, the studios are creating increasingly violent content to survive the avalanche of free content.

Although pornography viewing has recently been normalized in society, actresses in the pornography industry often suffer from a variety of mental disorders, alcoholism and drug addiction, have frequently been sexually abused as children, and are much more likely to die at a young age from drug overdoses or suicide attempts.
