  • Friday, December 31, 2027 is also a federal holiday, because New Year's Day 2028 falls on a Saturday.
  • Post offices close on all 11 holidays; Federal Reserve Banks stay open on the Fridays before Saturday holidays; the NYSE and Nasdaq trade on Columbus Day and Veterans Day but close for Good Friday.
  • Federal employees who must work a holiday earn double their basic rate; private employers are not required by federal law to give the day off or pay extra.
  • The UK has eight bank holidays in 2027, Canada ten federal general holidays, and Australia a national core plus state-specific dates.

There are 11 federal holidays in 2027, and the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has published the official dates: New Year's Day (Friday, January 1), Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 18), Washington's Birthday (February 15), Memorial Day (May 31), Juneteenth (observed Friday, June 18), Independence Day (observed Monday, July 5), Labor Day (September 6), Columbus Day (October 11), Veterans Day (Thursday, November 11), Thanksgiving (November 25) and Christmas Day (observed Friday, December 24). Three of the 2027 federal holidays fall on a weekend, so federal workers get a Friday or Monday off instead.

On a federal holiday, post offices close and regular mail is not delivered, the Federal Reserve and most banks close, and the stock market is closed on most, but not all, of them. Below: the full list, a table of what is open and closed on each date, pay rules, state differences, and the 2027 public holidays in the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.

The 11 federal holidays in 2027 (official OPM dates)

Federal holidays are set by law in Title 5 of the United States Code, section 6103. The statute fixes each holiday either to a calendar date (January 1, June 19, July 4, November 11, December 25) or to a particular Monday or Thursday, and OPM publishes the resulting dates for each year:

  1. New Year's Day: Friday, January 1, 2027.
  2. Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.: Monday, January 18 (third Monday in January).
  3. Washington's Birthday: Monday, February 15 (third Monday in February); widely called Presidents' Day, but the law and OPM use only the official name.
  4. Memorial Day: Monday, May 31 (last Monday in May).
  5. Juneteenth National Independence Day: Saturday, June 19, observed by most federal employees on Friday, June 18.
  6. Independence Day: Sunday, July 4, observed on Monday, July 5.
  7. Labor Day: Monday, September 6 (first Monday in September).
  8. Columbus Day: Monday, October 11 (second Monday in October).
  9. Veterans Day: Thursday, November 11.
  10. Thanksgiving Day: Thursday, November 25 (fourth Thursday in November).
  11. Christmas Day: Saturday, December 25, observed on Friday, December 24.

There is no Inauguration Day holiday in 2027; that Washington, DC-area holiday next occurs on January 20, 2029.

The observed-date rule: when a holiday falls on a weekend

Most federal employees work Monday through Friday, so the law provides substitute days. Under 5 U.S.C. 6103(b), when a holiday falls on a Saturday, the preceding Friday is treated as the holiday for pay and leave purposes. When it falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is the holiday, a rule set by section 3(a) of Executive Order 11582 of February 11, 1971. OPM calls these "in lieu of" holidays. In 2027 the rule applies three times: Juneteenth moves to Friday, June 18; Independence Day to Monday, July 5; and Christmas Day to Friday, December 24.

There is a fourth, easily missed consequence at the end of the year. New Year's Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, so OPM's 2028 schedule lists Friday, December 31, 2027, as the observed New Year's Day holiday. Federal offices will be closed on both Friday, December 24 and Friday, December 31, 2027.

What is closed on federal holidays in 2027: post office, banks, stock market

A closed sign hanging inside the glass door of a small-town post office on a bright morning, with an American flag reflected in the window
Post offices close on all 11 federal holidays; banks and the stock market follow their own, slightly different, calendars.

The U.S. Postal Service observes all 11 federal holidays: post offices close and there is no regular mail delivery. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, USPS has kept post offices open on the preceding Friday with normal deliveries, as it did for July 3, 2026. USPS had not yet posted its 2027 holiday list when this guide was written, so the Friday, June 18 and Friday, December 24 entries in the table follow that established practice rather than a 2027 announcement.

The Federal Reserve publishes its own schedule (release K.8). For holidays on a Saturday, the Federal Reserve Banks stay open on the preceding Friday while the Board of Governors closes; for holidays on a Sunday, all Federal Reserve offices close the following Monday. Most commercial banks follow the Reserve Bank calendar, which is why bank holidays in 2027 differ from the federal-employee calendar on June 18 and December 24.

The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq observe nine of the federal holidays plus Good Friday, stay open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day, and for weekend holidays close on the same Friday or Monday the federal government observes.

On Friday, June 18 and Friday, December 24, federal offices and the stock market are closed but banks and mail carriers will most likely be working; Columbus Day and Veterans Day are the reverse. Our guide to whether the post office is open on Veterans Day covers the November 11 case in detail.

Days that are not federal holidays but feel like them

  • Easter is Sunday, March 28, 2027. Neither Easter nor Good Friday (March 26) is a federal holiday, although the NYSE and Nasdaq close for Good Friday every year. Post offices and banks are open.
  • Halloween falls on a Sunday in 2027 (October 31) and is not a public holiday anywhere in the United States; see our Halloween guide for the date and traditions.
  • Black Friday, November 26, 2027, is a normal federal workday: mail is delivered, banks are open, and the stock market closes early at 1:00 p.m. Eastern. Many private employers give it off. See our list of stores open on Thanksgiving for retail hours around the holiday.
  • Christmas Eve is a special case in 2027: because Christmas falls on a Saturday, Friday, December 24 is already the observed federal holiday. In other years it is a day off for federal employees only if the president signs an order closing agencies, as happened for December 24, 2024, and for December 24 and 26, 2025, in an order signed December 18, 2025, a week before the holiday, so it can never be planned around months ahead. Read is Christmas Eve a federal holiday for the general rule and Christmas Eve hours for store and bank hours.
  • Election Day is not a federal holiday, and 2027 is an off-year with no federal general election.
Quick rule for any date

If the date is one of the 11 in the OPM list (or its Friday/Monday substitute), expect no mail, closed banks and closed federal offices. Then check the two exceptions: markets trade on Columbus Day and Veterans Day, and banks and post offices stay open on the Friday before a Saturday holiday.

What a federal holiday means for your pay

Federal employees: OPM rules

For employees covered by Title 5 pay rules, a federal holiday is a paid day off. OPM's fact sheet on holidays, work schedules and pay sets out the details:

  • Paid holiday time off. A full-time employee on a standard schedule is excused from 8 hours at the rate of basic pay; on a compressed schedule the whole 9- or 10-hour day is the holiday, and on a flexible schedule the credit is 8 hours.
  • Holiday premium pay. An employee required to work during holiday hours receives basic pay plus holiday premium pay equal to basic pay, in other words 200 percent of the normal rate, for each holiday hour up to the regular daily tour. Anyone who performs any work during holiday hours gets a minimum of 2 hours of holiday premium pay. Overtime and night pay are added on top where they apply.
  • In-lieu-of holidays go to all full-time employees, including those on flexible or compressed schedules, when a holiday falls on their nonworkday. Part-time employees do not get in-lieu-of holidays, though an agency that closes its building may grant them paid excused absence.

Holidays declared by executive order, such as a Christmas Eve closure, are treated the same way for pay and leave purposes because the orders expressly bring the day within Executive Order 11582 and 5 U.S.C. 6103(b).

Private employers: what the Department of Labor says

The federal holiday list binds the federal government, not private businesses. The U.S. Department of Labor states that the Fair Labor Standards Act does not require payment for time not worked, including holidays, federal or otherwise; time off and holiday pay are a matter of agreement between employer and employee or union. The main federal exception is government contractors, whose holiday benefits can be written into wage determinations under the McNamara-O'Hara Service Contract Act (contracts over $2,500) and the Davis-Bacon Act. Check your employee handbook rather than the OPM calendar.

State holidays that differ from the federal list

Each state sets its own holidays for state offices, courts and schools, and the differences are bigger than many people expect.

  • States add holidays. Massachusetts observes Patriots' Day on the third Monday in April; the state's trial courts list Monday, April 19, 2027, as a closure. Texas, under Texas Government Code chapter 662, marks the national holidays, adds state holidays, and designates "skeleton crew" days on which agencies must keep enough staff to serve the public, while allowing full closures on the Friday after Thanksgiving, December 24 and December 26.
  • States treat the same date differently. Texas lists June 19 as Emancipation Day, a state holiday requiring a skeleton crew, rather than as a national holiday.
  • Rules for working the holiday differ. A Texas state employee who works a holiday receives compensatory time off within 12 months, not the federal double pay.

For your DMV, courthouse, state tax office or public school, check the state's or district's own calendar.

2027 public holidays in the UK, Canada and Australia

United Kingdom: bank holidays 2027 (gov.uk)

England and Wales have eight bank holidays in 2027: New Year's Day (Friday, January 1), Good Friday (March 26), Easter Monday (March 29), the Early May bank holiday (Monday, May 3), the Spring bank holiday (Monday, May 31), the Summer bank holiday (Monday, August 30) and, because December 25 and 26 fall on a weekend, substitute days for Christmas Day on Monday, December 27 and Boxing Day on Tuesday, December 28. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own variations, including St Andrew's Day (Tuesday, November 30) in Scotland and St Patrick's Day (Wednesday, March 17) in Northern Ireland. Gov.uk notes that employers do not have to give paid leave on bank holidays.

Canada: statutory holidays 2027 (canada.ca)

The Canada Labour Code gives federally regulated employees 10 paid general holidays: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Thanksgiving Day, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Applied to 2027 those fall on Friday, January 1; Friday, March 26; Monday, May 24 (the Monday before May 25); Thursday, July 1; Monday, September 6; Thursday, September 30; Monday, October 11; Thursday, November 11; Saturday, December 25; and Sunday, December 26. When Christmas Day, Boxing Day or certain other fixed-date holidays fall on a non-working weekend day, the employee gets a paid holiday on the working day immediately before or after, so the 2027 Christmas holidays will typically be taken on Monday, December 27 and Tuesday, December 28. Provinces and territories add their own holidays.

Australia: national public holidays 2027 (Fair Work Ombudsman)

Australia's public holidays are set by each state and territory, but a core set is national: New Year's Day (Friday, January 1), Australia Day (Tuesday, January 26), Good Friday (March 26), Easter Monday (March 29), Anzac Day (Sunday, April 25, with an additional Monday, April 26 holiday in several jurisdictions), Christmas Day (Saturday, December 25) and Boxing Day (Sunday, December 26). Because both Christmas dates fall on the weekend, every state and territory adds public holidays on Monday, December 27 and Tuesday, December 28. The King's Birthday is Monday, June 14 in most of the country but Monday, September 27 in Western Australia and Monday, October 4 in Queensland. The Fair Work Ombudsman's 2027 page links to each state's official list.

Why 2027 looks the way it does

The Friday-and-Monday substitutions come from the Saturday rule in 5 U.S.C. 6103(b) and the Sunday rule in Executive Order 11582 of February 11, 1971. Juneteenth is the newest holiday; OPM's 2021 schedule shows its first observance on Friday, June 18, 2021, because June 19 that year was also a Saturday. 2021 and 2027 share the same calendar, so the 2027 pattern of three weekend holidays repeats 2021 and will next recur in 2038.

How to plan around the 2027 holidays

  • Mail and shipping: expect no USPS delivery on the 11 holiday dates. Allow an extra day for anything that must arrive by Tuesday, July 6 or Tuesday, October 12.
  • Payments: transfers through the banking system do not settle on Federal Reserve holidays, so a payday that lands on one usually arrives the business day before or after.
  • Investing: ten full market closures plus one 1:00 p.m. early close on Friday, November 26. The NYSE's published 2027 calendar lists no early close in Christmas week, since December 24 is itself a holiday.
  • Christmas week: Friday, December 24 is the federal holiday and Saturday is Christmas Day; see what is open on Christmas Day for store, restaurant and pharmacy hours.

OPM's federal holidays page is the authority for the federal calendar and offers a downloadable iCalendar file for 2024 through 2030; the Federal Reserve, NYSE and USPS pages in the sources list settle banks, markets and mail. This guide will be updated if USPS or the White House announces changes.

Frequently asked questions

How many federal holidays are there in 2027?

There are 11 federal holidays in 2027, the same number as every year since Juneteenth was added in 2021. They are set by 5 U.S.C. 6103 and published by the Office of Personnel Management. Three of them, Juneteenth, Independence Day and Christmas Day, fall on a weekend in 2027 and are observed on Friday, June 18, Monday, July 5 and Friday, December 24.

Is Christmas Eve 2027 a federal holiday?

Yes, in effect. Christmas Day 2027 is a Saturday, so under 5 U.S.C. 6103(b) the preceding Friday, December 24, is treated as the federal holiday. Federal offices will be closed, the stock market will be closed, and no executive order is needed. Post offices and Federal Reserve Banks, however, normally stay open on the Friday before a Saturday holiday.

What holidays is the post office closed in 2027?

USPS observes all 11 federal holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. On those dates post offices are closed and regular mail is not delivered. USPS had not published its 2027 list at the time of writing, but in past years it has kept post offices open on the Friday before a Saturday holiday.

Are banks closed on Juneteenth 2027?

Juneteenth falls on Saturday, June 19, 2027. The Federal Reserve's K.8 schedule says Reserve Banks stay open on Friday, June 18, while only the Board of Governors closes, so most commercial banks will be open on the Friday. Branches that normally open on Saturdays may close on June 19 itself; check your bank. The stock market is closed on Friday, June 18.

Is the stock market open on Veterans Day and Columbus Day in 2027?

Yes. The NYSE and Nasdaq do not close for Columbus Day (Monday, October 11, 2027) or Veterans Day (Thursday, November 11, 2027), even though post offices, banks and federal offices are closed. The exchanges do close for Good Friday, March 26, 2027, which is not a federal holiday.

Do private employers have to give the day off on federal holidays?

No. The U.S. Department of Labor explains that the Fair Labor Standards Act does not require pay for holidays or premium pay for working them. Federal holidays bind the federal government; private time off is a matter of your contract, employer policy or union agreement. Government contractors covered by the Service Contract Act or Davis-Bacon Act may have holiday benefits written into their wage determinations.

How are federal employees paid for working on a holiday?

Under OPM rules, an employee required to work during holiday hours receives basic pay plus holiday premium pay equal to basic pay, so 200 percent of the normal rate, for each holiday hour up to the regular daily tour, with a minimum of 2 hours of premium pay for any holiday work. Overtime and night pay are added on top where they apply. Employees excused from duty simply receive their basic pay for the day.

Why is December 31, 2027 a federal holiday?

Because New Year's Day 2028 falls on a Saturday. The law moves a Saturday holiday to the preceding Friday for most federal employees, so OPM's 2028 schedule lists Friday, December 31, 2027, as the observed New Year's Day holiday. The stock market and Federal Reserve Banks remain open that day.

Is Good Friday a federal holiday in 2027?

No. Good Friday (March 26, 2027) and Easter Sunday (March 28, 2027) are not federal holidays, and post offices, banks and federal offices are open on Good Friday. The NYSE and Nasdaq do close for Good Friday, and it is a public holiday in the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.

What are the UK bank holidays in 2027?

England and Wales have eight in 2027: New Year's Day (January 1), Good Friday (March 26), Easter Monday (March 29), Early May bank holiday (May 3), Spring bank holiday (May 31), Summer bank holiday (August 30), and substitute days for Christmas Day (Monday, December 27) and Boxing Day (Tuesday, December 28). Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own variations, listed on gov.uk.
