How to read the earthquake list
Magnitude measures the energy released: each step up is about 32 times more energy, so an M6 releases about 1,000 times the energy of an M4. Depth matters as much: a shallow M5 under a town is felt far more strongly than a deep M6 under the ocean. Felt reports are the number of people who told the USGS “Did You Feel It?” survey that they felt the shaking – the best quick sign of how many people were affected.
PAGER alert (green, yellow, orange, red) is the USGS estimate of likely fatalities and economic losses for significant earthquakes; tsunami flag means the event is in a region and size where a tsunami center may issue a message – it is not itself a warning. Locations and magnitudes are updated for hours after an event as more stations report, so numbers on this page can change; the event pages show the latest revision.
Earthquake questions
Was there an earthquake today?
Yes – earthquakes happen every day. In the last 24 hours the USGS recorded 163 earthquakes, 45 of them magnitude 2.5 or more; the strongest was M6.9 76 km NE of Ozernovskiy, Russia.
Where was the last earthquake in the U.S.?
139 earthquakes in the U.S. in the last 24 hours; the strongest M3.6 2 km NW of Knik, Alaska (4 h ago). The newest: 2 km SSW of Pāhala, Hawaii (1 h ago).
How often do earthquakes happen?
Worldwide, about 15 earthquakes of magnitude 7 or more a year, around 130 of magnitude 6–6.9, about 1,300 of 5–5.9 and tens of thousands of magnitude 3–4.9; small ones (under 3) happen hundreds of times a day, most of them in California, Alaska, Nevada and Hawaii in the U.S. catalog.
What magnitude can you feel?
Most people notice magnitude 3 within a few kilometres of the epicenter; magnitude 4 is felt widely and rattles windows; damage usually starts around magnitude 5 near weak buildings, and depends on depth, distance and soil as much as on magnitude.
Can earthquakes be predicted?
No. Seismologists can say where earthquakes are likely over decades and estimate aftershock chances after a big one, but no method predicts the time and place of a specific earthquake.
Earthquakes by place
Source: U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) earthquake catalog, real-time feeds and FDSN event service; magnitudes and locations are revised by seismologists for hours after an event. Times are Eastern (ET) unless marked UTC. Not an alert service: for warnings follow local authorities and tsunami centers.
