Veterans Day Messages
Veterans Day honors everyone who has served in the U.S. armed forces, in wartime or peacetime, at home or overseas, living or gone. It's always observed on November 11, which falls on a Wednesday in 2026.
A few sincere words can mean a lot to a veteran, whether it's your dad, a buddy from high school, the coworker who never talks about his deployment, or a neighbor who raises the flag every morning.
Below you'll find thank-you messages for family, friends, coworkers, cards and social media, plus simple notes kids can write. After the list there's guidance on what to write, what to skip, and when to send it.

Family 13
Dad, you never made a big deal out of your Army years, but I grew up watching the discipline and decency you brought home. Proud to be your kid today and every day.
To my husband on Veterans Day: I remember the deployments, the late-night calls across time zones, and how you came home and still found room to be gentle. I love you, and I'm so proud of you.
Mom, you balanced a uniform, a career, and us kids, and you never once complained where we could hear it. Thank you for your service, and for everything after it.
Grandpa, the photo of you in uniform still hangs in our hallway. Thank you for your service. Your stories are part of who our family is.
Hey, little brother. You went from stealing my car keys to leading a squad. Couldn't be prouder. Thanks for your service.
Sis, I still remember watching you march at your boot camp graduation. I cried, you rolled your eyes. Thank you for serving, and for always being braver than me.
Son, the day you came home from your last deployment is still one of the best days of my life. We're proud of your service and even prouder of the man you are.
To our daughter: you raised your right hand and meant every word. We're so proud of you, today and every day.
To my favorite uncle: thanks for the Coast Guard stories, the terrible jokes, and the years you spent keeping our coastline safe. Happy Veterans Day.
To my aunt: you taught me to make a bed with hospital corners and never to back down from a challenge. Both came from the Air Force, and both stuck. Thank you for your service.
Grandma, I didn't know until this year that you served as a Navy nurse. Thank you for your service, and for every person you cared for.
To my wife, the toughest person I know: you served our country with grit and grace, and you still out-plan me on every family trip. Proud of you today and always.
To my parents, a two-uniform household for twenty years: thank you for your service, and for making all the moves, goodbyes, and homecomings feel like an adventure.
Friends 10
Thank you for your service, my friend. I know it cost you more than you'll ever say, and I'm grateful for every bit of it.
Happy Veterans Day to my best friend, who still folds laundry like there's an inspection coming. I give you a hard time, but I respect the heck out of what you did.
Not everyone raises their hand to serve. You did, and I'm proud to call you my friend. Lunch is on me today.
Thinking of you today and all the holidays you spent far from home. Thanks for everything you gave.
You gave up years of birthdays, weddings, and Sunday dinners to wear the uniform. I hope today you feel how grateful we are.
Hope someone buys your coffee today. If not, I'm buying. Thanks for serving.
I know Veterans Day can stir up a lot. No speech from me, just thanks, and I'm around if you want to grab a beer or sit in silence.
Just wanted to say thank you. Your service matters to me, today and every day.
Whether you were deployed or stationed stateside, you signed up and showed up. That's what today honors, and I'm thankful for you.

Card 10
When you signed up, you didn't know where you'd be sent or how long you'd be gone. You said yes anyway. You missed holidays and birthdays, slept in places most of us will never see, and came home carrying things the rest of us will never fully understand. I can't repay that, but I can tell you that I notice, and I'm grateful. This card is a small thank-you for a very big thing. Happy Veterans Day, and thank you for your service.
It's hard to find the right words to thank someone who gave so much. So I'll keep it simple: thank you. Your service is remembered and respected.
I hope today brings you a little pride, a few calls from old friends, and a lot of thank-yous. You've earned every one.
Please accept this card with our sincere gratitude for your service in the United States Armed Forces. Our community is better for having you in it.
God bless you for your service to our country. I'm praying you feel the thanks of a grateful nation today.

How to Write a Meaningful Veterans Day Message
The best Veterans Day messages are short, sincere, and specific. "Thank you for your service" is fine, but it lands harder when you add something only you could say: the branch they served in, a story they told you, or what their service changed for your family.
A Simple Formula
- Greeting: use their name or what you call them ("Dad," "Sergeant," "Hey, Mike").
- Acknowledge the service: name the branch or the years if you know them.
- Say what it means to you: one concrete detail beats three big words.
- Sign off warmly: "With gratitude," "Proud of you," or simply "Love."
Worked example: "Uncle Robert, I've been thinking about your twenty years in the Navy and all the postcards you sent us from ports we couldn't pronounce. Thank you for your service, and for always coming home with a story. Love, Sarah."
Etiquette: What to Say and What to Skip
Do
- Honor all service. Veterans Day covers everyone who served, combat or not, active duty, Guard or Reserve. Don't assume someone deployed or saw combat.
- Get the branch right. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Space Force. Calling a Marine a soldier is a classic slip.
- Keep it about them. Gratitude and respect, not speeches.
Skip
- Mixing it up with Memorial Day. Memorial Day, in May, remembers those who died in service. Veterans Day honors all who served, living and deceased, and it's the day to thank the veterans in your life directly.
- Politics. A thank-you note isn't the place for foreign policy.
- Probing questions. Don't use the day to ask about combat or what someone saw. Let them lead.
Why November 11?
The holiday began as Armistice Day. Fighting in World War I stopped at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, 1918. Armistice Day became a legal holiday in 1938, and in 1954 Congress renamed it Veterans Day to honor veterans of all wars. It's spelled "Veterans Day," with no apostrophe, because the day belongs to all veterans rather than to one. When November 11 lands on a weekend, the federal holiday is observed on the nearest Friday or Monday.
Timing Your Message
Send texts and emails on November 11 itself. If you're mailing a card, drop it in the mail about a week early, around November 4. If you miss the day, a late note is still welcome: "I was thinking about your service this week and wanted to say thank you."
Choosing the Right Medium
| Medium | Best for | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Card | Family, mentors, older veterans | A few sentences with a real memory or detail. |
| Text | Friends, siblings, younger relatives | One or two lines. "Thinking of you today. Thanks for everything you gave." |
| Coworkers, clients | Warm but professional; acknowledge their service and what they bring to the team. | |
| Social media | Your wider network | A photo of the veteran in your family, with permission, and a short caption. |
Writing to a Veteran You Don't Know Well
Maybe it's a coworker, a neighbor, or a friend's grandfather. Keep it short and avoid guessing at details. "Thank you for your service. I'm glad to know you" is enough. If you know their branch, use it. If you don't, don't guess; "your years in uniform" works for everyone.
Writing cards for veterans you've never met, through a school, church, or a local VA medical center, is a common Veterans Day project. In those, keep the tone warm and general, sign your first name and town, and leave out anything political or graphic.
Beyond a Message
If you want your thank-you to carry a little more weight, pair it with something small and specific: pick up the check at lunch, offer a ride to a local Veterans Day ceremony, or call instead of texting. For veterans who are older or live alone, a visit often means more than any card.
Why It Matters
Many veterans quietly carry their service long after the uniform comes off, and a lot of them never hear a direct thank-you from the people closest to them. A short note shows that someone noticed. That's the whole point, and it doesn't take more than a minute.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best message for Veterans Day?
Something short and personal. "Thank you for your service" is always appropriate, and it means more when you add a detail: "Thank you for your years in the Coast Guard, Grandpa. I'm proud to be your granddaughter."
Can I say Happy Veterans Day?
Yes. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day celebrates living veterans as well as those who have died, so "Happy Veterans Day" is widely accepted. Pairing it with a thank-you makes it more personal.
When is Veterans Day 2026?
Veterans Day is always November 11. In 2026 it falls on Wednesday, November 11.
What is the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day?
Veterans Day, November 11, honors everyone who served in the U.S. armed forces, living and deceased. Memorial Day, the last Monday in May, remembers those who died while serving.
Is it Veterans Day or Veteran's Day?
The official spelling is Veterans Day, with no apostrophe. The day honors all veterans rather than belonging to any one of them.
