Is the Post Office Open on Veterans Day 2026? No – Here's Why
- Veterans Day 2026 is Wednesday, November 11 – it's on the official USPS holiday list, so post offices are closed and there is no regular mail delivery.
- Priority Mail Express still moves, with Sunday and holiday delivery in many major markets for an extra fee.
- UPS picks up and delivers as normal; FedEx runs with modified service (early pickups in some areas); FedEx Office and The UPS Store locations are open.
- Federal Reserve Banks are closed, but the NYSE and Nasdaq trade normally.

No. Post offices are closed on Veterans Day, and regular mail is not delivered. Veterans Day 2026 falls on Wednesday, November 11, and it is one of the 11 holidays on the official USPS holiday list for 2026. Retail counters stay shut all day, and letter carriers do not run their normal routes.
The mail system does not stop completely. Priority Mail Express is delivered "every day, all year, with limited exceptions," and USPS offers Sunday and holiday delivery "in many major markets for an additional fee." Private carriers such as UPS and FedEx keep working, and the stock market is open. Because the holiday lands in the middle of the week, it is easy to forget – plan anything time-sensitive around it.
Below: what is open and closed on November 11, how mail moves around the holiday, and every postal holiday for 2026 and 2027. More holiday guides are in the 77.today holidays section.

Is the post office open on Veterans Day 2026?
No. On Wednesday, November 11, 2026, post office retail counters are closed. You can't buy stamps at the counter, hand a package to a clerk, apply for a passport or buy a money order. There is no regular delivery of letters, First-Class packages or Priority Mail.
Some services still work, depending on your local office:
- Lobbies and PO Boxes. Many post offices keep the lobby open after hours, so you may be able to reach your PO Box. Lobby hours vary by location – check them in the USPS Find Locations tool before you go.
- Self-Service Kiosks. Where a lobby is open and has a kiosk, you can weigh a package, buy postage with a card and drop it in the lobby slot. USPS's 2025 Veterans Day memo told staff on duty to check kiosks and lobby drops for overflow.
- Collection boxes. USPS treats Veterans Day as a "non-widely observed" holiday because many businesses are open and still sending mail. In its 2025 operations memo, USPS told district managers to run full collections where mail processing is scheduled. Whether a given blue box is emptied on the holiday depends on your area, so don't count on a same-day postmark.
The answer was the same last year: in 2025, Veterans Day fell on Tuesday, November 11, and post offices were closed with no regular delivery. USPS closes on the holiday whatever day of the week it falls on.

|---|---|
| USPS post offices | Closed |
| USPS regular mail delivery | None |
| USPS Priority Mail Express | Delivered in many major markets (extra fee) |
| UPS pickup and delivery | Normal; Ground Saver and Mail Innovations +1 business day |
| The UPS Store | Open |
| FedEx | Modified service: early pickups in some areas |
| FedEx Office | Open |
| Federal Reserve Banks | Closed |
| NYSE and Nasdaq | Open, regular hours |
Banks
The Federal Reserve lists Veterans Day (November 11 in both 2026 and 2027) among the holidays its banks observe. With the Fed closed, payments that run through it – wire transfers and ACH transfers such as direct deposits and bill payments – are not processed until Thursday, November 12. Many banks and credit unions close their branches for the day, but not all of them do, so check your own bank's holiday schedule. ATMs, mobile apps and online banking keep working.
UPS
UPS is open. Its 2026 holiday schedule says pickup and delivery services are available on November 11, 2026, and that The UPS Store locations are open. One exception: UPS Ground Saver and UPS Mail Innovations shipments need one extra business day in transit, because USPS handles the final delivery of those services and is closed for the holiday.
FedEx
FedEx is open with "modified service." Its 2026 holiday schedule explains that this means early on-call pickups and early drop box pickups in some areas. FedEx Office locations are open as usual. If you plan to drop off a FedEx package late in the day, check the pickup time at your location first.
Stock market
The stock market is open. Veterans Day is not on the NYSE holiday calendar, so the NYSE and Nasdaq trade during regular hours, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern. Stock trading continues even though your bank branch may be closed.
Amazon
Amazon packages generally keep coming. Amazon uses its own delivery network as well as USPS and other carriers. USPS's 2025 Veterans Day memo said Amazon would drop packages at all USPS Sunday/holiday delivery sites for holiday delivery. So even a package handed to the Postal Service may arrive on November 11. Your tracking page is the best guide.
Mail and package delivery around November 11
A midweek holiday adds a day to most USPS deliveries. Mail you send on Monday, November 9, or Tuesday, November 10, usually arrives a day later than it otherwise would. USPS gives a delivery window of 1–5 days for First-Class Mail, and the holiday does not count as a delivery day.
Normal service resumes on Thursday, November 12. Post offices open at their regular hours, and carriers deliver the mail that piled up on Wednesday. USPS's 2025 memo told managers to plan for extra mail and package volume after the holiday, so deliveries may come later in the day than usual.
If you have a USPS carrier pickup scheduled for November 11, it won't happen. Your options:
- Schedule the pickup for Tuesday or Thursday instead.
- Use a lobby kiosk if your post office's lobby is open.
- Ship through UPS or FedEx, which both pick up on Veterans Day.
Online sellers should add a day to their delivery estimates for USPS orders shipped that week and tell buyers before they ask. A package that shows no movement on November 11 is not lost; it simply has not been scanned yet.
All USPS holidays in 2026 and 2027
USPS closes on 11 holidays a year – the same 11 federal holidays that government offices observe. These are the 2026 postal holidays as USPS publishes them:
| Holiday | 2026 date |
|---|---|
| New Year's Day | Thursday, January 1 |
| Martin Luther King Jr. Day | Monday, January 19 |
| Presidents Day | Monday, February 16 |
| Memorial Day | Monday, May 25 |
| Juneteenth | Friday, June 19 |
| Independence Day | Saturday, July 4 (post offices open Friday, July 3) |
| Labor Day | Monday, September 7 |
| Columbus Day | Monday, October 12 |
| Veterans Day | Wednesday, November 11 |
| Thanksgiving Day | Thursday, November 26 |
| Christmas Day | Friday, December 25 |
One detail to note: when a holiday falls on a Saturday, USPS closes on Saturday, not Friday. For Independence Day 2026, USPS said post offices would be open on Friday, July 3, with normal deliveries. The day before was treated as a holiday only for some employees, for pay and leave purposes.
USPS has not published its 2027 list yet. The dates below come from the Office of Personnel Management's federal holiday calendar. Three 2027 holidays fall on a weekend. When that happens, federal offices observe the nearest weekday, and USPS has kept post offices open on the Friday before a Saturday holiday, as it did in 2026.
| Holiday | 2027 date | Federal observance (OPM) |
|---|---|---|
| New Year's Day | Friday, January 1 | Friday, January 1 |
| Martin Luther King Jr. Day | Monday, January 18 | Monday, January 18 |
| Presidents Day | Monday, February 15 | Monday, February 15 |
| Memorial Day | Monday, May 31 | Monday, May 31 |
| Juneteenth | Saturday, June 19 | Friday, June 18 |
| Independence Day | Sunday, July 4 | Monday, July 5 |
| Labor Day | Monday, September 6 | Monday, September 6 |
| Columbus Day | Monday, October 11 | Monday, October 11 |
| Veterans Day | Thursday, November 11 | Thursday, November 11 |
| Thanksgiving Day | Thursday, November 25 | Thursday, November 25 |
| Christmas Day | Saturday, December 25 | Friday, December 24 |
A few common questions this calendar answers:
- Is the post office open on Columbus Day? No. It's a postal holiday – Monday, October 12, in 2026 and Monday, October 11, in 2027. Normal service resumes the next day.
- Is the post office open the day after Thanksgiving? Yes. Black Friday is not a postal holiday. In 2026, post offices close on Thursday, November 26, and reopen on Friday, November 27.
- Is the post office open on Christmas Eve? USPS does not list Christmas Eve as a holiday in 2026, so post offices are open.
Is the post office open today? How to check any day
On any day not in the table above, post offices are open. Monday through Friday they keep their regular hours; on Saturday most have shorter hours, and almost all are closed on Sunday. Hours differ a lot from one office to another, and small rural offices can have short windows or close for lunch.
To check a specific office, use the USPS Find Locations tool at usps.com. Enter a ZIP code to see retail hours, lobby hours, the last collection time and whether there is a Self-Service Kiosk.
Offices can also close for reasons that have nothing to do with holidays: storms, wildfires, power outages or building problems. USPS posts these closures on its Service Alerts page, which is worth checking before you drive anywhere during bad weather.
"Is the post office open on Monday?" Yes, unless that Monday is a holiday. In 2026 that means Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day or Columbus Day. In 2027, July 5 (the observed Independence Day) is also a Monday holiday.
Finally, look at the last collection time printed on the blue box or listed for your post office. It is often earlier than closing time. A letter dropped after the last pickup will not be postmarked until the next collection day.
Tips: shipping before a postal holiday
- Ship a day early. If something has to arrive by the end of the week of November 9, send it on Friday, November 6, or Monday, November 9, not midweek.
- Pay for Priority Mail Express only when you need it. It is the only USPS service with holiday delivery, and only in many major markets, for an additional fee. Check the delivery date at the counter or online before you pay.
- Use a private carrier for holiday pickups. UPS picks up and delivers as usual on November 11. FedEx operates too, but pickups may run early in some areas.
- Prepare postage at home. Print a Click-N-Ship label at usps.com and drop the package in a lobby slot or collection box. It will be scanned when USPS picks it up.
- Need the counter? Go on Tuesday. Anything that needs a clerk – passports, money orders, certified mail – has to be done by Tuesday, November 10, or wait until Thursday, November 12.
