The Wegovy pill, Novo Nordisk's once-daily oral semaglutide 25 mg for weight loss, has gone from a US-only launch in January 2026 to approvals in the UK and the European Union, and this autumn brought the first real-world data on people who switch to it from injections. In the United States the pill still sells for $149 to $299 a month for self-paying patients, and since July 1, 2026, eligible Medicare Part D enrollees can get it for $50 a month through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge.

The FDA approved the tablet on December 22, 2025, as the first GLP-1 pill for chronic weight management. By June 2026, Novo Nordisk said, it had passed three million prescriptions, more than 80% of them for people who had never used a GLP-1 medicine before. Below is where the Wegovy pill stands in October 2026: the latest news, how much it costs, how to take it correctly, what the OASIS 4 trial showed, its side effects, and how it compares with the Wegovy injection, Rybelsus and Eli Lilly's oral rival, Foundayo.

Wegovy pill news: what happened this autumn

Three developments shaped the Wegovy pill story between September and mid-October 2026.

  • First switching data (September 30). At the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) meeting in Milan, Novo Nordisk presented OCTANE, a real-world analysis of 194 adults on the Ro telehealth platform who moved from injectable semaglutide or tirzepatide to the Wegovy pill. Those who stayed on the tablet for three months lost an average of 4.1% of their body weight, or 8.8 pounds from a starting average of 221.6 pounds. About two in five (40.7%) lost at least 5%, and the share classed as having obesity fell from 87.1% to 65.5%.
  • Launch in Germany (September 1). Reuters reported that Germany became the first European Union country where the pill is on sale, after the European Commission approved it on July 15. Novo Nordisk now lists the pill as launched in the United States, the United Arab Emirates, the UK and Germany, with more markets planned "in the coming quarters."
  • Competition in Europe (October 16). The European Medicines Agency's committee recommended approval of Lilly's Foundayo (orforglipron), the second oral obesity drug to win its backing. Until the European Commission signs off, the Wegovy pill remains the only GLP-1 weight-loss tablet authorized across the EU.

The OCTANE numbers describe people who chose to switch, stayed on the pill and reported their own weights; Novo Nordisk itself lists selection bias and self-reporting as limitations. What they do suggest is that moving from a weekly pen to a daily tablet does not have to mean losing ground, at least over the first three months.

Wegovy pill approval timeline: US, UK, EU and Canada

UK. The Wegovy pill is legal to prescribe in Britain but is sold privately, and private providers set the price. Before it can be offered on the NHS, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has to assess it; when the MHRA decision came out, NICE said Novo Nordisk still needed to make its evidence submission.

European Union. The EU authorization covers adults with a body mass index (BMI) of at least 30, or at least 27 with one weight-related condition, alongside diet and exercise. Approval is EU-wide, but each country decides launch timing, pricing and reimbursement separately, so availability will spread country by country.

Canada and Australia. As of mid-October 2026, Novo Nordisk had not announced approval or a launch date for the Wegovy pill in Canada or Australia. The Wegovy injection is available in both countries.

How much does the Wegovy pill cost?

In the US, Novo Nordisk sells the pill directly to self-paying patients through NovoCare Pharmacy and through retail and telehealth partners at the same cash prices. The current self-pay prices on NovoCare are:

Wegovy pill doseWhen it is usedSelf-pay price per month
1.5 mgDays 1 to 30 (starting dose)$149
4 mgDays 31 to 60$199
9 mgDays 61 to 90$299
25 mgDay 91 onward (maintenance)$299

When the pill launched in January, the 4 mg dose was also $149; that introductory price ended on April 15, 2026, when it moved to $199. For comparison, the Wegovy pen costs $349 a month for self-pay patients at standard doses and $399 for the 7.2 mg Wegovy HD dose, so the tablet is the cheapest way to buy Wegovy without insurance.

Insurance, Medicare and TrumpRx

  • Commercial insurance. Coverage depends on your plan's formulary; many employer plans still exclude weight-loss drugs. If your plan covers it, Novo Nordisk's savings offer can bring the copay down to as little as $25 a month, subject to terms.
  • Medicare. Traditional Part D rules have long excluded drugs used purely for weight loss. The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, run by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), changes that from July 1, 2026, through December 31, 2027: eligible Part D enrollees pay a fixed $50 for a monthly supply. Novo Nordisk says the program covers all doses of Wegovy, both the pen and the pill. Ask your doctor whether you qualify, because the program has clinical criteria.
  • TrumpRx. Under its pricing agreement with the White House announced before launch, Novo Nordisk agreed to offer starter doses of its weight-loss pill at $149 a month to cash buyers through the government's TrumpRx site, as well as to Medicare and Medicaid enrollees.

A small glass of water and a single white tablet on a bedside table in soft morning light
The Wegovy pill is taken first thing in the morning with no more than a few sips of plain water.

How to take the Wegovy pill correctly

The Wegovy pill only works if it is taken the right way, because semaglutide is a peptide that the stomach normally breaks down. The tablet carries an absorption enhancer, but it needs an empty stomach and a head start. The FDA prescribing information sets out these rules:

  1. Take it once a day, in the morning, on an empty stomach. The simplest habit is to take it as soon as you wake up.
  2. Use plain water only, up to 4 ounces (about half a cup, or roughly 120 ml). No coffee, tea, juice or sparkling water with the tablet.
  3. Swallow it whole. Do not split, crush, chew or dissolve it.
  4. Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else or taking other oral medicines.
  5. If you miss a dose, skip it and take the next tablet the following day. Do not take two.
  6. Keep the tablets in their original bottle, at room temperature and away from moisture. No refrigerator is needed.

The dose rises every 30 days: 1.5 mg, then 4 mg, then 9 mg, reaching the 25 mg maintenance dose on day 91. If the 25 mg dose is not tolerated, the label lets your prescriber consider staying at a lower one. The fasting rules also affect other medicines: semaglutide tablets raised levothyroxine (thyroid hormone) exposure by about a third in a study, so people on thyroid medicine or other drugs that need close monitoring should check timing with their doctor or pharmacist.

A morning routine that works

Keep the bottle and a small glass next to your bed. Take the tablet when you wake up, then shower, dress or walk the dog. By the time you sit down for coffee and breakfast, the 30 minutes are up. People who take other morning medicines can usually move them to after the wait, but confirm that with a pharmacist.

Wegovy pill results: what OASIS 4 showed

FDA approval rested on OASIS 4, a 64-week phase 3 trial of 307 adults with obesity, or overweight with at least one weight-related condition, who did not have diabetes. Everyone also received diet and activity counseling. According to the prescribing information:

13.6%average weight loss at 64 weeks on 25 mg (placebo 2.4%)
59.8%lost at least 10% of body weight (placebo 14.4%)
47.0%lost at least 15% (placebo 5.5%)
27.9%lost at least 20% (placebo 3.1%)

About three in four participants (76.3%) lost at least 5% of their weight, against 31.3% on placebo. The 13.6% figure counts everyone who was assigned the pill, including people who stopped taking it. Among those who stayed on treatment as planned, Novo Nordisk has described weight loss of around 17%, which is the figure cited in the EU approval announcement. In practical terms, the pill performs in the same range as the original Wegovy 2.4 mg injection, which produced about 15% average weight loss over 68 weeks in its main trial.

The Wegovy pill also carries the cardiovascular indication that the injection earned from the SELECT trial: it is approved to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death in adults with established heart disease and overweight or obesity. That is a meaningful distinction from Foundayo, whose label covers weight management only.

Wegovy pill side effects

The side effects are the same family as with Wegovy injections, mostly in the stomach and gut, and usually worst while the dose is being raised. The label's list of common reactions includes:

  • nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and constipation
  • abdominal pain, bloating, indigestion, belching, gas and heartburn (reflux)
  • headache, tiredness and dizziness
  • stomach flu (gastroenteritis) and cold-like symptoms
  • low blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, especially alongside insulin or sulfonylureas
  • hair loss and changes in skin sensation, as listed in Novo Nordisk's safety summary

In OASIS 4, 6.9% of people on the pill stopped because of side effects, compared with 5.9% on placebo; stomach problems were the most common reason (3.4% versus 2%).

Serious warnings

The Wegovy pill has the same boxed warning as all semaglutide products: in rodents, semaglutide caused thyroid C-cell tumors. It must not be used by anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Other warnings cover pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney problems linked to dehydration from vomiting or diarrhea, serious allergic reactions, a faster heart rate, worsening diabetic eye disease in people with type 2 diabetes, depression or suicidal thoughts, and the risk of inhaling stomach contents during anesthesia. It should not be used during pregnancy. Seek urgent care for severe stomach pain that does not go away, or swelling of the face or throat.

Wegovy pill vs Wegovy injection. Same molecule, similar results in separate trials, different routines. The label allows switching: someone on the 2.4 mg pen can start 25 mg tablets one week after the last injection, and someone on tablets can start the 2.4 mg pen the day after the last tablet. The pen still offers things the pill does not, including the higher 7.2 mg dose, approval for teenagers and the MASH liver indication. For differences between semaglutide brands, see Ozempic vs Wegovy.

Wegovy pill vs Rybelsus. Rybelsus is the older semaglutide tablet for type 2 diabetes, at much lower doses. It is not approved for weight loss, and its milligrams do not convert directly to the Wegovy pill. Our Ozempic pill guide explains Rybelsus and the newer Ozempic tablets in detail.

Wegovy pill vs Foundayo. Lilly's Foundayo, the brand name for orforglipron, won FDA approval on April 1, 2026. It is a non-peptide small molecule, so it needs no fasting routine, but it produced less average weight loss in its main trial and carries more drug-interaction rules. We cover the two in depth in Foundayo vs Wegovy pill.

Who the Wegovy pill suits, and who might prefer something else

The pill makes the most sense for adults who qualify for a GLP-1 medicine and either dislike needles, travel often or want the lowest Wegovy cash price. Because it does not need a refrigerator, it is easier to carry on trips. People with established heart disease gain the added benefit of the cardiovascular indication.

Others may do better with another option:

  • People who want the most weight loss. Zepbound (tirzepatide) and the 7.2 mg Wegovy HD dose produce larger average losses in their trials. See Wegovy vs Zepbound and our ranking of the best GLP-1 for weight loss.
  • People with unpredictable mornings or many morning medicines. The fasting rule is strict, and a pill taken with breakfast or coffee loses much of its effect. A weekly pen, or a pill without food rules, may fit better.
  • Teenagers. The pill is approved for adults only; the injection is approved from age 12.

As with every GLP-1 medicine, weight tends to return after stopping, so most people should plan for long-term treatment alongside diet and activity changes.

What comes next for the Wegovy pill

Novo Nordisk has said it will launch the pill in more countries over the coming quarters, so further European launches and decisions in markets such as Canada and Australia are the next things to watch. In the UK, the key step is a NICE appraisal, which would decide whether the pill can be prescribed on the NHS. In Europe, the European Commission's decision on Foundayo will end the Wegovy pill's run as the only GLP-1 weight-loss tablet authorized in the EU.

In the US, prices have held steady since April, and the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge runs through the end of 2027. Novo Nordisk is also building its pipeline of oral obesity drugs: on September 29 it licensed HRS-1596, an experimental once-weekly oral GLP-1/GIP pill, from China's Hengrui Pharma. A weekly pill would remove the daily fasting routine that is the Wegovy pill's main drawback, but it is still years from approval.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Wegovy pill FDA approved?

Yes. The FDA approved Wegovy tablets 25 mg on December 22, 2025, for weight reduction and long-term weight maintenance in adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition, alongside diet and exercise. It is also approved to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death in adults with established heart disease and excess weight. It was the first GLP-1 pill approved for weight management.

How much does the Wegovy pill cost without insurance?

Through NovoCare Pharmacy and partner pharmacies, US self-pay prices are $149 a month for the 1.5 mg starting dose, $199 for 4 mg and $299 for both 9 mg and the 25 mg maintenance dose. That makes it cheaper than the Wegovy pen, which costs $349 a month for self-pay patients, or $399 for the 7.2 mg dose.

Does Medicare cover the Wegovy pill?

Through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, which runs from July 1, 2026, to December 31, 2027, eligible Medicare Part D enrollees can get Wegovy, including the pill, for $50 for a monthly supply. Clinical eligibility criteria apply, so you need a prescription and a conversation with your doctor about whether you qualify. Standard Part D plans have otherwise excluded drugs used only for weight loss.

How do you take the Wegovy pill?

Take one tablet each morning on an empty stomach with up to 4 ounces of plain water. Swallow it whole without splitting, crushing or chewing. Then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else or taking other oral medicines. If you miss a dose, skip it and take the next one the following day rather than doubling up.

How much weight can you lose on the Wegovy pill?

In the 64-week OASIS 4 trial, adults taking the 25 mg tablet lost 13.6% of their body weight on average, compared with 2.4% on placebo. About 60% lost at least 10% and 28% lost at least 20%. People who took the pill exactly as planned lost around 17% on average, according to Novo Nordisk. Results vary widely from person to person.

Is the Wegovy pill as effective as the injection?

The two contain the same drug, semaglutide, and produced similar average weight loss in separate trials: 13.6% at 64 weeks for the 25 mg pill and about 15% at 68 weeks for the 2.4 mg injection. They have not been compared directly. The injection also comes in a higher 7.2 mg dose, which produced larger losses, and is approved for teenagers.

Is the Wegovy pill available in the UK and Canada?

The UK medicines regulator approved the Wegovy pill on June 11, 2026, and it is available through private providers, which set their own prices. It is not yet on the NHS, pending a NICE assessment. As of mid-October 2026, Novo Nordisk had not announced an approval or launch date for the pill in Canada, where the Wegovy injection is available.

What is the difference between the Wegovy pill and Rybelsus?

Both are oral semaglutide tablets from Novo Nordisk, but Rybelsus is approved only for type 2 diabetes, at doses of 3, 7 and 14 mg. The Wegovy pill is approved for weight management at a 25 mg maintenance dose. The doses are not interchangeable, and Rybelsus is not approved for weight loss, even though people taking it may lose some weight.

What are the most common Wegovy pill side effects?

The most common side effects are nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, bloating, belching, heartburn, headache, tiredness and dizziness. They are usually worst while the dose is being increased. In OASIS 4, 6.9% of people on the pill stopped because of side effects versus 5.9% on placebo. Serious but rare risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder disease and kidney problems.

Is Foundayo the same as the Wegovy pill?

No. Foundayo is Eli Lilly's brand name for orforglipron, a different molecule approved by the FDA on April 1, 2026. It is a small-molecule pill that can be taken at any time, with or without food, while the Wegovy pill requires an empty stomach and a 30-minute wait. Foundayo produced 11.1% average weight loss at its top dose in its main trial.
