Need 5-letter words starting with S? The most common are STILL, STATE, SINCE, START, SMALL, STORY, SOUTH, SHORT, STUDY, SPACE, SHARE and SOUND. Our word list has 1,056 five-letter words that start with S, more than for any other letter; 279 of them are common answers in our Daily Word answer bank. Below you will find all 279, grouped by second letter, special sections for words starting with ST, SH and SL, then 472 more valid words that word games accept and a section of rare ones.

S is the king of first letters. In our bank of 1,705 everyday five-letter words, 279 start with S, or 16.4%, almost twice as many as the next letter, C (153). In the full list of valid words the gap is wider still: 1,056 S-words against 665 for C. That is why a green S in the first tile is good news and a challenge at the same time: you know a lot, but the list is long. The blends and patterns below cut it down quickly.

Most of these words start with a consonant blend rather than S plus a vowel: ST in STILL, STATE, START and STORY, SH in SHORT and SHARE, SM in SMALL, SP in SPACE. That is the key to solving S-words, and it is where the next section starts.

S-word patterns that save guesses

Think in blends, not single letters

Only 37.0% of valid S-words have a vowel in the second slot. The rest start with a two- or three-letter blend. Here is how the blends split in our data, counting all valid words and then common answers:

StartValid words in our listCommon answersCommon examples
ST-13055STATE, START, STORY, STAND
SH-11440SHORT, SHARE, SHAPE, SHIFT
SP-9835SPACE, SPEAK, SPEED, SPEND
SC-7022SCENE, SCALE, SCORE, SCARY
SL-6717SLEEP, SLICE, SLIDE, SLOPE
SW-5315SWEET, SWING, SWIFT, SWORD
SN-4414SNACK, SNAKE, SNEAK, SNOWY
SK-447SKILL, SKIRT, SKULL, SKATE
SM-249SMALL, SMART, SMILE, SMOKE
STR-125STRAP, STRAW, STRAY, STRIP, STRUT
SQU-73SQUAD, SQUAT, SQUID

ST, SH and SP together cover 130 of the 279 common S-answers, almost half. If you know the word starts with S, a second guess that tests T, H and P in the second slot is a strong move.

The vowel usually comes third

Because the second slot is so often a consonant, the third slot is where the first vowel lands: 215 of the 279 common S-words have a vowel there, about 77%, as in STATE, SHORE, SPICE and SMOKE. E and A are the most frequent letters after the S (in 111 and 109 common words), followed by T (95) and R (75).

How S-words end

E is the most common last letter, ending 62 common S-words (SPACE, SCENE, STONE, SMILE). Y comes next with 33 (STORY, SORRY, SANDY, SHINY), then T with 32 (START, SHORT, SMART, SWEET) and K with 25 (STOCK, SNACK, SHARK, STEAK). Once you have the start, testing E and Y at the end settles a big share of the list.

Watch out for plurals

The valid list contains 276 words that start and end with S, nearly all of them plurals or verb forms such as SEEMS, SIGNS or STARS. Word games accept them as guesses, but our Daily Word never uses plurals as answers, so they are only useful as probes. Also remember repeated letters: 82 of the 279 common words have one, like SPEED, SKILL, STEEL and SASSY.

S words split into clear families: ST, SH and SL alone cover a big share of the list.

How to use S-words in Wordle-style games

S is a great letter to test early, but where you put it matters. In our answer bank S is the first letter of 16.4% of words, yet it is the second letter of only 0.7%. Our ranking of every opener against all 1,705 answers puts STARE sixth and SLATE 13th of 8,493 words, both with S up front, while RAISE, the winner, puts S fourth. Full details are in our starting word analysis.

  1. Confirm the S first. An opener like STARE or SLATE tells you right away whether the word starts with S.
  2. Then test the blend. If S is green and nothing else, try a word with T, H or P in the second slot, such as SHORT or SPEND. Those three blends cover almost half the common S-answers.
  3. Put a vowel in the third slot. About three in four common S-words have one there.
  4. Check the ending. E, Y, T and K finish 152 of the 279 common S-words.
  5. Ignore plurals for the final answer. Words like SEEMS or STARS are valid guesses but will not be the answer in our game.

A worked example: you open with SHARE and see a green S, a yellow H and gray A, R and E. The H is in the word but not in the second slot, so SH- words are out. Only seven common S-answers fit those clues: SIGHT, SIXTH, SLOTH, SLUSH, SOUTH, SUSHI and SWISH. SLOTH is a smart next guess: it gives a different color pattern for each of the seven. SOUTH would show a yellow O plus green T and H, SLUSH a green L and H, SIXTH a green T and H, SWISH only a green H, and so on. Whatever comes back, you know the answer for your fourth guess.

The best way to get faster is to play every day. Our free Daily Word has one new word at midnight New York time, the same for everyone, with six guesses and green, yellow and gray tiles; the on-screen keyboard colors the letters you have used. After the game you see the word's meaning, your stats and streak, and a share button that copies only the colored grid. For other lists built from the same data, see 5-letter words starting with A, and for general technique, our Wordle strategy guide. When you want a change, try the daily crossword or an easy sudoku.

Where these words come from

Every list on this page was produced by a script from real word lists. Valid words come from the ENABLE word list, a public-domain list of English words used by many word games, with 8,636 five-letter entries. Common words come from our Daily Word answer bank of 1,705 everyday five-letter words, each with a short meaning. Familiarity sorting uses wordfreq, an open-source dataset of how often words appear in real text. Our game's answers always come from the common bank and are never names, plurals or offensive words.
