Here are 5-letter words ending in E, sorted so the useful ones come first. Common examples include THERE, WHERE, WHILE, STATE, THREE, HOUSE, PLACE, WHITE, LARGE, PHONE, VOICE and TABLE. Our word list has 931 five-letter words ending in E; 330 of them are common answers in our Daily Word answer bank, and we list every one below, grouped by first letter and by ending. After that come 346 more valid words that a word game will accept as guesses, sorted from most to least common, and a final section of rare and archaic entries.

E is the most common last letter among everyday five-letter words. In our answer bank of 1,705 words, 330 end in E, or 19.4%, ahead of Y (262 words) and T (195). So if a Wordle-style puzzle shows a green E in the last tile, you are in crowded territory, and a good list plus a few patterns can save you several guesses. Both are below.

Notice how many of them are workhorse words: THERE, WHERE and WHILE are among the most used words in the language. If you are stuck with _ _ _ _ E and no other clues, a common word like these is statistically a better bet than an unusual one, because game answers are chosen from everyday vocabulary.

How to find a 5-letter word ending in E fast

Lists are only half the job. The other half is narrowing the list with what you already know. These patterns come straight from our counts of the 330 common E-ending answers.

The silent-E shape is the default

The most frequent shape is consonant, vowel, consonant, then E in the last three-plus-one slots: think SHAPE, PRIDE, STONE, FLUTE. Of the 330 common words, 166 have a consonant in the second slot, a vowel in the third and a consonant in the fourth. That is just over half. When you have a final E and nothing else, try a guess that tests a vowel in the middle slot.

Check the fourth letter

The letter right before the E is the most informative slot. Among common answers, the most frequent fourth letters are S (38 words, as in HOUSE and NURSE), V (34, as in ABOVE and DRIVE), T (32, as in STATE and WRITE), G (32, as in LARGE and JUDGE) and L (29, as in TABLE and WHILE). C follows with 24 (PLACE, VOICE). V is the surprise: it almost never ends an English word, so it shows up before a silent E instead. If you have ruled out S, T and G, try V.

Watch for a second E

Fifty-six of the 330 common words have at least two E's, such as THREE, THERE, WHERE, SCENE, THEME, PEACE and SENSE. In a guessing game a gray E elsewhere on the board tells you there is no second E, but a green final E does not rule one out. If your vowels are running out, a double E is worth considering.

Common starting letters

S is the most common first letter here too: 62 common words start with S and end in E, from SCALE to SWIPE. A follows with 31, then G and P with 27 each. A useful habit is to guess a word that tests S at the start and a common fourth letter at the same time, such as STATE or SHAPE.

Two groups deserve a special mention. The -LE words (29 of them, like TABLE, TITLE, UNCLE and APPLE) often hide a consonant pair before the L, so testing B, P or C early helps. The -UE words (10, like VALUE, VENUE, QUEUE and ARGUE) are easy to miss because U is a weak guess most of the time.

More valid 5-letter words ending in E

These words are in the public-domain ENABLE word list, so word games that use it (including our Daily Word) accept them as guesses, but they are not in our answer bank. Many are perfectly normal words, such as past-tense forms, pronouns or more specialized vocabulary: SPOKE, WROTE, THESE, THOSE, WHOSE, CRIME. Within each letter they are sorted from most to least common, so the familiar ones come first. There are 346 of them.

The three groups add up to 904 words. The remaining 27 of the 931 E-ending entries are left out on purpose: words that are offensive or crude, or that read like names, are not printed on this page.

Using this list in Wordle-style games

A long list is useful only if you shrink it quickly. Here is a simple routine that works in any five-letter guessing game, including our Daily Word.

  1. Confirm the E early. Our tests on the full answer bank show that strong openers such as RAISE, STARE and SLATE already end in E, so the final slot is often settled after one guess. See our opener rankings for the numbers.
  2. Test the fourth slot next. S, V, T, G, L and C cover 189 of the 330 common E-ending answers. A second guess like CLOVE, or one that puts S or G before the E, tells you a lot.
  3. Then test the middle vowel. With a final E, the third letter is a vowel in 215 of the 330 common words, about two out of three, so place A, I or O there.
  4. Do not forget doubles. THREE, AGREE, SPREE and LEVEE are all common answers that end in a double E or contain one.
  5. Prefer common words for the final guess. Answers in our game are always everyday words, never names, plurals or offensive words, so pick from the common list above before trying anything from the rare section.

A concrete example: suppose your board shows a green E at the end, a yellow A and gray R, S and T. Scan the lists for words with A not in its yellow slot and no R, S or T. PLACE, BLAME, FLAME, GLAZE and WHALE all fit, and each tests a different set of letters. Guessing PLACE would check P, L and C at once, which cuts the field faster than a word that repeats letters you already know.

If you like these patterns, the same approach works for other letter positions. See our lists of 5-letter words starting with S and 5-letter words starting with A, or read our Wordle strategy guide for the bigger picture.

Where these words come from

Every list on this page was generated by a script from two word lists, not typed by hand. Valid words come from the ENABLE word list, a public-domain list that many word games use; it has 8,636 five-letter words. Common words come from our Daily Word answer bank of 1,705 everyday five-letter words, each with a short meaning. To sort words by how familiar they are, we used wordfreq, an open-source dataset that estimates how often each word appears in real text. Our game, Daily Word, uses exactly these lists: any ENABLE word is accepted as a guess, and the daily answer always comes from the common bank. A new word appears at midnight New York time, it is free, and there is nothing to install. For a different kind of puzzle, try the daily crossword.
