Young Beyoncé: Childhood in Houston
Beyoncé was born in Houston to Tina Knowles, a hairdresser and salon owner, and Mathew Knowles, a Xerox sales manager who later became her manager. Her first name is a tribute to her mother's maiden name, Beyincé. Her younger sister, Solange Knowles, is a Grammy-winning singer in her own right. She took dance classes from early childhood and began winning local singing and talent competitions as a young child. She later studied at Houston's High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.
As a girl she sang in the choir of St. John's United Methodist Church in Houston and joined a group that eventually became Destiny's Child. In 1992 the group, then called Girl's Tyme, competed on the television talent show "Star Search" and lost, an experience Beyoncé has described as a formative disappointment. Her father left his corporate job to manage the group full time.
Destiny's Child
Destiny's Child signed with Columbia Records and released its self-titled debut album in 1998. Line-up changes followed, but the trio of Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams became one of the best-selling girl groups in history with "Bills, Bills, Bills," "Say My Name," "Independent Women Part I," "Survivor" and "Bootylicious." The group won its first Grammys in 2001 for "Say My Name." Destiny's Child announced its split in 2005 after the album "Destiny Fulfilled," though the members have reunited on stage several times since, including at the 2013 Super Bowl halftime show and at Coachella in 2018.

Solo Career (2003–2012)
Her debut solo album, "Dangerously in Love" (2003), produced the No. 1 hits "Crazy in Love" with Jay-Z and "Baby Boy," and won five Grammys in 2004. "B'Day" (2006) included "Irreplaceable," which spent ten weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100, and "Déjà Vu." The same year she starred in the musical film "Dreamgirls."
In 2008 she married Jay-Z, played Etta James in "Cadillac Records" and released the double album "I Am... Sasha Fierce," built around her stage alter ego. It contained "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," "Halo" and "If I Were a Boy," and earned six Grammys in 2010, then a record for a female artist in one night. In 2010 she ended her professional relationship with her father and took control of her career through her company, Parkwood Entertainment. The R&B and soul album "4" (2011) followed, with "Run the World (Girls)" and "Love On Top." In 2026 "Single Ladies" was added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry.
Visual Albums and Lemonade (2013–2021)
In February 2013 she headlined the Super Bowl XLVII halftime show in New Orleans. That December she released the self-titled visual album "Beyoncé" overnight, with no announcement, a move that popularized the surprise release and helped push the global music industry to move new releases to Fridays. It produced "Drunk in Love" and "XO."
"Lemonade" (2016), another visual album, explored infidelity, Black womanhood and Southern identity, with songs such as "Formation," "Sorry" and "Hold Up." It was the best-selling album of 2016 worldwide and won a Peabody Award for its accompanying film. She then released "Everything Is Love" (2018) with Jay-Z as The Carters, delivered a celebrated two-weekend headlining set at Coachella in 2018, documented in the Netflix film "Homecoming" (2019), and voiced Nala in Disney's "The Lion King" (2019). Her song "Brown Skin Girl" and the visual album "Black Is King" (2020) grew out of that project.

Renaissance and Cowboy Carter (2022–Present)
In 2022 Beyoncé launched a planned album trilogy with "Renaissance," a tribute to Black and queer dance music pioneers led by "Break My Soul." At the 2023 Grammys she became the artist with the most Grammy wins of all time. The Renaissance World Tour (2023) and its concert film "Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé" were both major commercial successes.
"Cowboy Carter" (2024), Act II of the trilogy, reclaimed the Black roots of country music. Its lead single "Texas Hold 'Em" topped the Billboard Hot 100 and made her the first Black woman to top Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart. The album also featured "II Most Wanted" with Miley Cyrus and a cover of Dolly Parton's "Jolene." At the February 2025 Grammys it won Album of the Year and Best Country Album.
The Cowboy Carter Tour ran across North America and Europe from April to July 2025. According to Billboard Boxscore, its 32 shows grossed $407.6 million and sold about 1.6 million tickets, making it the highest-grossing country tour on record. She became the first woman with two tours above $400 million.
Beyoncé Now: 2026

She attended with Jay-Z and their daughter Blue Ivy. In the same month the Library of Congress selected "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" for the National Recording Registry, the first time one of her recordings was chosen.
