Who is Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, known as CR7, was born in Funchal on the Portuguese island of Madeira. A forward who began as a dazzling winger, he is widely regarded, alongside Lionel Messi, as one of the two greatest players of his generation and among the best of all time. He has won five Ballon d'Or awards, five UEFA Champions League titles, the 2016 European Championship and two UEFA Nations League titles with Portugal, and league titles in England, Spain, Italy and Saudi Arabia.

Ronaldo is the leading scorer in the history of men's football: on October 9, 2026, he scored the 980th official goal of his career for club and country, according to ESPN. He also holds the men's international records for goals (146) and appearances. Away from the pitch he is the most-followed person on Instagram.

He should not be confused with Brazil's Ronaldo Nazário (born 1976), the two-time World Cup winner also known simply as Ronaldo.

Childhood in Madeira

Ronaldo grew up in a poor family in Funchal, the youngest of four children. His mother, Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro, worked as a cook and cleaner; his father, José Dinis Aveiro, was a municipal gardener and part-time kit man at the local amateur club Andorinha. He was named Ronaldo after US President Ronald Reagan, his father's favorite actor. José Dinis, a veteran of Portugal's colonial war in Angola, struggled with alcoholism and died in 2005. The family was raised in the Roman Catholic faith.

He played for Andorinha from 1992 and then for Nacional, before a three-day trial at Sporting CP in Lisbon in 1997 earned him a place in the club's academy at 12. Living away from his family was hard, and as a teenager he was diagnosed with a racing heart condition; after a minor laser procedure he returned to training within days.

Club career

Sporting and Manchester United (2002–2009)

Ronaldo made his first-team debut for Sporting in 2002. In August 2003, after he tormented Manchester United's defenders in a friendly, Sir Alex Ferguson signed him for £12.24 million, then a record for a teenager in English football. Given the club's famous number 7 shirt, he developed over six seasons from a showboating winger into the best player in the world. He won three consecutive Premier League titles (2007–2009), the FA Cup (2004), the 2008 Champions League and the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup. His 31 Premier League goals in 2007–08 earned him his first Ballon d'Or and the European Golden Shoe.

Real Madrid (2009–2018)

In July 2009 Real Madrid signed him for a then world-record transfer fee of £80 million. Over nine seasons he scored 450 goals in 438 matches, becoming the club's all-time leading scorer. He won two La Liga titles (2012, 2017), two Copas del Rey and four Champions League titles (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018), including three in a row under Zinedine Zidane, and finished as the competition's top scorer in six consecutive seasons. He won four more Ballon d'Or awards in Madrid and became the all-time leading scorer in Champions League history.

Juventus and return to Manchester (2018–2022)

In July 2018 Ronaldo joined Juventus, winning Serie A in 2019 and 2020, the Coppa Italia in 2021 and two Italian Super Cups. He was Serie A's top scorer in 2020–21 and passed 100 goals for the club. In August 2021 he returned to Manchester United and scored 24 goals in all competitions in his first season back, but after a public falling-out with manager Erik ten Hag and a highly critical television interview, his contract was terminated by mutual agreement in November 2022.

Al Nassr (since 2023)

On December 30, 2022, Ronaldo signed for Saudi club Al Nassr, and his arrival triggered a wave of high-profile signings across the Saudi Pro League. He won the 2023 Arab Club Champions Cup, set a league single-season record with 35 goals in 2023–24, and became the first player to finish as top scorer in four different national leagues. In June 2025 he signed a two-year extension until June 2027. On May 21, 2026, he scored twice in a 4–1 win over Damac on the final day of the season to clinch Al Nassr's first league title since 2019 and his first in Saudi Arabia, finishing two points ahead of Al Hilal. It was the eighth league title of his career, as the BBC noted.

Portugal national team

Ronaldo made his senior debut for Portugal on August 20, 2003, at 18. At Euro 2004 on home soil Portugal reached the final but lost to Greece. He has been captain since 2008. His greatest international triumph came at Euro 2016 in France: he was forced off injured in the 25th minute of the final against the hosts, but coached from the touchline as Portugal won 1–0 after extra time. He added UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.

In September 2021 he broke Ali Daei's men's international scoring record of 109 goals, and in March 2023 he became the most-capped male international. He went into the 2026 World Cup in North America with 226 caps and 143 goals, according to FIFA. On June 23, 2026, he scored twice in a 5–0 win over Uzbekistan in Houston, becoming the first player to score at six World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026). He also scored as Portugal came from behind to beat Croatia in the round of 32, taking his international tally to 146. On July 6, 2026, Portugal lost 1–0 to Spain in the round of 16 in Arlington, Texas, to a 91st-minute goal by Mikel Merino, ending his World Cup career.

Cristiano Ronaldo latest news: Portugal suspension

After the World Cup, Jorge Jesus, who had coached Ronaldo at Al Nassr, took charge of Portugal. Ronaldo was an unused substitute in a 2–1 Nations League win away to Norway on September 27, 2026, and then left the squad before the match against Denmark, accusing Jesus of breaking promises about his playing time. He later apologized to teammates and supporters and said he still wanted to play for Portugal. On October 9–10, 2026, the Portuguese Football Federation opened disciplinary proceedings and provisionally suspended him, as reported by ESPN and Sky Sports. Under federation rules, an unjustified abandonment of national team duty can bring a suspension of one to six months; no final decision had been announced as of mid-October 2026. The same week he scored his 980th career goal in Al Nassr's 3–0 win over Diriyah.

Cristiano Ronaldo jersey number

Ronaldo's number 7 is one of the best-selling shirts in football and the basis of his CR7 brand. He wore 28 at Sporting, then inherited the number 7 at Manchester United, previously worn by George Best, Eric Cantona and David Beckham. At Real Madrid he wore 9 in his first season because Raúl had the 7, switching to 7 from 2010. He wore 7 at Juventus and on his return to United, and wears 7 for Al Nassr and Portugal.

Playing style

Early in his career Ronaldo was a fast, trick-laden winger. Over time he became one of the most efficient finishers the game has seen: powerful with both feet, outstanding in the air thanks to an exceptional standing jump, and dangerous from free kicks with his knuckleball technique. His fitness and longevity are unusual; he has scored hundreds of goals after turning 30. His "Siuuu" goal celebration is among the most imitated gestures in world sport.

Rivalry with Lionel Messi

For more than a decade Ronaldo and Lionel Messi dominated football's individual awards, sharing every Ballon d'Or from 2008 to 2017 and 13 of the 15 awarded between 2008 and 2023. Their rivalry was at its height in Spain, with Ronaldo at Real Madrid and Messi at Barcelona, and "Messi or Ronaldo" remains one of the sport's most popular debates.

Business and public life

Ronaldo has a lifetime contract with Nike and has built the CR7 brand into hotels, gyms, clothing, fragrances and footwear, and there is a museum dedicated to him in Funchal. His YouTube channel, "UR · Cristiano," launched in August 2024, broke platform records for the fastest growth to one million subscribers. He has no tattoos, which allows him to donate blood regularly, and he has funded treatment for children and hospitals. During Euro 2020 he made headlines by moving two Coca-Cola bottles aside at a press conference and holding up water. On November 18, 2025, he visited the White House to meet President Donald Trump.

In 2017 Spanish prosecutors accused Ronaldo of evading taxes on image rights between 2011 and 2014. In January 2019 he accepted a plea deal in Madrid, paying a multimillion fine and receiving a suspended 23-month prison sentence that did not require jail time. In 2018 an American woman filed a civil lawsuit in Las Vegas over an alleged incident in 2009, which Ronaldo denied; Las Vegas prosecutors declined to bring criminal charges in 2019, and a US federal judge dismissed the civil case in June 2022.

Cristiano Ronaldo wife and family

Ronaldo has been in a relationship with Spanish model and businesswoman Georgina Rodríguez since 2016; they met at a Gucci store in Madrid where she worked. The couple announced their engagement in 2025 and married in a civil ceremony in Cascais, near Lisbon, on August 11, 2026, with their five children present, as reported by the BBC. Earlier, from 2010 to 2015, he dated Russian model Irina Shayk.

Ronaldo has five children. His eldest son, Cristiano Ronaldo Jr., was born in June 2010 in the United States; the identity of his mother has never been made public. Twins Eva and Mateo were born to a surrogate in June 2017, and daughter Alana Martina was born to Ronaldo and Rodríguez in November 2017. In April 2022 Rodríguez gave birth to twins; their daughter, Bella Esmeralda, survived, but her twin brother died at birth.

Cristiano Ronaldo Jr.

Cristiano Ronaldo Jr., known as Cristianinho, is a forward in Al Nassr's youth academy. He received his first call-up to Portugal's under-15 team in May 2025, as Reuters reported, and has since played for Portugal's under-16 side, scoring a brace in 2026. He has also trained with Real Madrid's academy.
