As Cybercrime Grows, Telegram Scams and Other Messaging App Threats Emerge as New Targets
Cybercrimes committed using messaging applications such as Telegram, WhatsApp, and Discord have increased significantly. One of the most common threats is access to user information using malicious links, ransomware, and information theft. According to new data, underground market activity via Telegram has grown by 53% compared to last year, and the application's monthly user base has reached 900 million. The sale of weapons and identity information on this platform reveals the scale of the danger. Given these developments, there are several important things users should pay attention to, noted information technology expert Professor Ali Murat Kirik.
He emphasized that cybercrimes committed using messaging applications have increased significantly in recent years. As they become more widespread, scammers and malicious actors are developing various ways to access sensitive user information. For example, methods such as attempting to obtain personal information by deceiving users with fake accounts, demanding money by blocking users with ransomware, or stealing information by infiltrating devices using malicious links are frequently used.
Recent Kaspersky Digital Footprint Intelligence data also revealed another highly alarming trend; cybercriminals have increasingly started using Telegram for shadow business and illegal transactions. According to published data, the volume of such activity in May–June 2024 increased by 53% compared to the same period last year.
"Contrary to popular belief, Telegram is very popular and its user base is growing," emphasized Kaspersky Digital Footprint Intelligence analyst Alexey Bannikov. "The application's audience has reached 900 million monthly users. The growing interest of the cybercriminal community in Telegram is driven by several key factors."
"The channel is promoted as the safest and most independent app that does not collect any user data, which gives malicious actors a sense of security and impunity. Furthermore, it is relatively easy to find or create a community on Telegram. This, along with other factors, allows various channels, including cybercriminals, to quickly gather an audience."
The issue was also discussed by Marmara University Faculty of Communication's Head of Visual Communication Design and information technology expert, Professor Kirik. He emphasized that the published data was overwhelming and that attention should be paid to some crucial points.
"Telegram is known for the privacy and security features it provides to its users. While these features protect user privacy, they also attract the attention of malicious individuals and cyber scammers. Therefore, it is not surprising that Telegram has become an attractive platform for such activities," the specialist emphasized. "However, this is not enough to blame Telegram alone. Other social media and messaging apps face similar threats. The important thing is for users and platform administrators to increase their security measures by being aware of such threats."
The Dangers of the Platform: Fraud Methods and User Protection Measures
Speaking about fraudulent activity on Telegram, Kirik highlighted a few more points.
"The most important of these is theft through fraud. In this case, scammers capture users' personal information, passwords, or financial details by sending fake messages or links. Additionally, it is a platform where investment and cryptocurrency fraud frequently occur. Scammers collect money from users by offering fake investment opportunities, promising high returns. Furthermore, the sale of counterfeit products or services is also very common. Scammers post fake advertisements for highly popular and in-demand products," the expert clarified. "Unfortunately, it is also true that the sale of weapons easily takes place on platforms like Telegram. Telegram has become an attractive medium for such illegal activities because it provides users with anonymity and privacy, making it very easy to hide one's identity. Those who sell weapons usually meet buyers in closed groups or private chats. Due to this situation, uncontrolled illegal arms trade is spreading, and insecurity and crime are increasing in society."
Pointing out that the identity information of many users is also sold on Telegram, Kirik warned to be careful.
"Personal information obtained through fraud is usually offered as databases containing identity data. This information can be used to create a fake identity, commit bank fraud, and carry out other acts of identity theft. If personal information falls into the hands of malicious actors, it can cause long-term financial and personal problems for the victims," he clarified. "Using this information, loans can be taken out, bank accounts can be accessed, or various fraudulent activities can be carried out. Victims may suffer financial losses and face long-term legal issues. Such dangers pose a serious threat to the security of Telegram users. To prevent illegal trade, such as weapons and identity information, users must be careful, and platforms must establish stricter control mechanisms."
The professor did not hide the fact that any user can become a victim of criminals.
"Yes, by being in these channels, we can become partners of some criminal organizations, even unintentionally. Being in Telegram channels can increase this risk. Especially participating in channels where criminal organizations operate or illegal content is shared can unknowingly involve users in such activities," he emphasized. "To avoid this, it is important to protect your accounts with strong and unique passwords. Enabling two-factor authentication can increase security. It is important not to click on unknown or suspicious links and to be cautious about messages from fake or deceptive accounts. Furthermore, it is important to be careful when sharing personal information and to be aware of social engineering attacks. For user security, it is also crucial to regularly check platform security settings and perform security updates on time."
