  • Check status at egov.uscis.gov with the 13-character receipt number from Form I-797C; watch the I-539 first, because the EAD is decided after it.
  • "New Card Is Being Produced" means approval; USCIS says cards should be produced within two weeks and to allow 30 days before reporting non-delivery.
  • USCIS accepts a slow-case inquiry only after the case inquiry date, which is based on the time to complete 93% of cases.

To check your H-4 EAD status, enter the 13-character receipt number from your Form I-797C at egov.uscis.gov (Case Status Online) or sign in to your USCIS online account. The receipt number is three letters followed by ten digits. The tool tells you the last action USCIS took on your Form I-765; it does not tell you how much longer the case will take. For that, compare your receipt date with the posted processing time and the case inquiry date, both explained below.

This page covers what each status message means for a category C26 application, why H-4 EAD cases stall, when USCIS will accept a question about a slow case, and how to request an expedite. It is general information, not legal advice.

How to check H-4 EAD case status

  1. Find your receipt number. It is printed on the Form I-797C, Notice of Action, that USCIS mails after it accepts your application. If you added Form G-1145 to your package, you also got it by text or email.
  2. Use Case Status Online. Enter the number without dashes. No account is needed.
  3. Or use a USCIS online account. Paper-filed cases can be added to an account. The account shows notices, lets you send secure messages, and lets you upload evidence for an expedite request. USCIS's processing times page also notes that signed-in users can see an estimated timeline for their case.
  4. Check each receipt separately. If you filed Form I-539 and Form I-765 together, you have two receipt numbers. If your spouse's Form I-129 was in the same package, that is a third. Your EAD cannot be approved before the I-539, so watch that one first.

What the letters in the receipt number tell you

The first three letters identify the USCIS system or location that receipted the case, such as EAC, LIN, WAC, SRC, MCT or IOE. For H-4 EADs they matter mainly at filing time: USCIS routes C26 mail by the prefix of your spouse's most recent I-129 receipt. They do not predict speed. USCIS now reports H-4 EAD processing under a single "Service Center Operations (SCOPS)" heading and says a specific location "is no longer an accurate representation of where a case is processed."

"New card is being produced" on an H-4 EAD

This is the status most applicants are waiting for. USCIS says that after it approves a Form I-765, "your EAD card should be produced within 2 weeks," and that it mails the card by U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail. It asks you to "allow a total of 30 days from approval before inquiring." If your address changed after filing, update it with both USCIS and USPS immediately; USCIS warns that otherwise "your document(s) could get lost, and you may need to reapply and pay the fee again."

You may start or resume work once you have the approved, unexpired EAD to present for Form I-9. The approval notice alone is not listed as an acceptable work authorization document for I-9 purposes, so ask your employer how it handles the days between approval and delivery.

How long each stage takes

USCIS publishes one number for the whole case, not for each status. As of October 14, 2026, the processing times tool shows 80% of C26 applications completed within 6.5 months when filed with an H-4 I-539 and within 17.5 months when filed standalone. The matching I-539 extension figure is 5 months when filed with an I-765.

There is no official figure for "approval time after biometrics" or "after RFE response." Anyone quoting a number of weeks for those steps is describing personal experience, not USCIS data. Our H-4 EAD processing time page explains the published figures and the historical trend.

H-4 EAD trackers, Trackitt and Reddit

Crowd-sourced trackers and forum threads are popular because the official tool says so little. They collect timelines that applicants enter themselves. They can show that cases from a given month are moving, and they are useful for learning what a notice looks like. Their limits are real:

  • the sample is self-selected and small compared with the number of C26 filings USCIS handles;
  • entries are unverified and often incomplete;
  • people with fast approvals and people with long delays are both more likely to post than those in the middle;
  • concurrent and standalone filings, and cases with and without biometrics, are often mixed together.

Use them for context. Use the USCIS tool and your receipt date for planning and for any inquiry.

Why an H-4 EAD case stalls

  • The I-539 is not decided. USCIS states that it "will not make a decision on your Form I-765 until after we have adjudicated your Form I-539."
  • The H-1B petition is not decided. Your H-4 cannot be extended past your spouse's approved H-1B period. A non-premium I-129 had a national median of 5.1 months in fiscal year 2026 through August 30, according to USCIS's historical data page.
  • Biometrics. The USCIS Policy Manual allows reuse of a prior photograph only if it was taken at a biometrics appointment within the past 36 months. If USCIS cannot reuse one, it schedules an appointment. Attorneys reported in spring 2026 that scheduling for H-4 EAD cases was inconsistent, with some cases approved with no appointment and others called in after a request for evidence.
  • A request for evidence. The clock effectively pauses until you answer.
  • A filing defect. Wrong fee, missing signature or an unaccepted form edition means rejection, and the receipt date resets when you refile.
  • Workload. National medians for the I-539 and for the general I-765 group both rose in fiscal year 2026 compared with 2025.

H-4 EAD biometrics: what to expect

Search interest in "H-4 EAD biometrics" jumped in early 2026, after USCIS tightened its photo reuse policy in December 2025. The current position, from primary sources:

  • The Form I-765 instructions say USCIS "may require you to appear for an interview or provide biometrics (fingerprints, photograph, and/or signature) at any time."
  • If an appointment is needed, USCIS mails a notice with the date, time and location.
  • The Policy Manual says that when an applicant fails to attend, USCIS "shall consider the application, petition, or request abandoned and denied" unless it received a change of address or rescheduling request before the appointment that it finds justifies the absence.
  • There is no separate biometric services fee for the I-765.
  • A broader DHS proposal to expand biometrics collection across immigration benefits was published November 3, 2025. As of October 14, 2026, it has not been finalized.

Bring the appointment notice and the photo ID named on it. If you cannot attend, follow the rescheduling instructions on the notice before the appointment time, not after.

Responding to an H-4 EAD request for evidence

An RFE lists what is missing and gives a deadline. Federal regulations cap RFE response time at 12 weeks, and the notice may give less. Practical points:

  • Send everything in one response. USCIS decides on the record once it receives your reply.
  • Put the RFE notice on top, as the notice instructs.
  • For the eligibility basis, the strongest document is the Form I-797 approval notice for your spouse's I-140. If the employer will not release it, USCIS says it may consider secondary evidence such as the I-140 receipt number.
  • Translate any foreign-language document with a translator's certification.
  • Keep proof of delivery.

When you can ask USCIS about your case

USCIS limits inquiries to cases that are outside normal processing time, and it defines that with a separate measure. The case inquiry date is based on the time it took to complete 93% of adjudicated cases, not the 80% figure shown as the processing time.

  1. Open the processing times tool.
  2. Select Form I-765, the H-4 category that matches how you filed, and Service Center Operations.
  3. Enter the receipt date from your I-797C.
  4. The tool returns either the date you may ask about your case or a link to submit a question.

Check back monthly, because the date moves when USCIS updates its data.

How to make an H-4 EAD expedite request

USCIS considers expedite requests case by case and says the decision "is within the sole discretion of USCIS." The criteria on its expedite page, last updated September 8, 2026, include severe financial loss to a company or person, emergencies or urgent humanitarian situations, certain nonprofit requests, government interests and clear USCIS error.

For an H-4 spouse, the relevant ground is usually severe financial loss. USCIS's guidance cuts both ways:

  • "Job loss may be sufficient to establish severe financial loss for a person, depending on the individual circumstances."
  • "The need to obtain employment authorization, standing alone, without evidence of other compelling factors, does not warrant expedited treatment."
  • The urgency must not be "the result of the petitioner's or applicant's failure to timely file the benefit request or to timely respond to any requests for evidence."

Steps. Call the Contact Center, ask Emma, or send a secure message selecting "expedite" as the reason. Give the receipt number and explain the ground. Upload evidence to your online account: an employer letter stating the date your job will end and the concrete loss to the business, proof that you filed at the earliest date available, household financial documents, or medical records for a humanitarian ground. If you ask without evidence, USCIS says it will send instructions for submitting it.

Since the automatic extension ended for renewals filed on or after October 30, 2025, a pending renewal no longer protects your job. That makes the filing date the single most important piece of evidence in a later expedite request. See H-4 EAD renewal and automatic extension.

If the card never arrives or has an error

  • Not delivered. USCIS says it may reissue a card that was not delivered, and you generally do not pay a new fee when the cause was a USCIS or USPS error. Start with the "did not receive card by mail" e-Request after 30 days from approval.
  • Wrong information, USCIS error. You do not file a new I-765 or pay again. Follow the "Replacement for Card Error" instructions on the I-765 addresses page.
  • Wrong information, your error. You file a new Form I-765 with the fee.

Some applicants whose cases are far past the posted times file suit in federal court asking a judge to order USCIS to decide. These cases are brought under the Administrative Procedure Act and the mandamus statute and require an attorney. One recent example shows how they can end: in a 2026 challenge to the automatic extension rule brought by Public Citizen, the organization reports that USCIS processed the plaintiff's renewal after a motion was filed and the case was then dismissed. A lawsuit does not guarantee approval, only a decision.

Quick reference

  • Check status with the receipt number at egov.uscis.gov or in your USCIS online account.
  • Watch the I-539 first; the EAD cannot be approved before it.
  • "New Card Is Being Produced" means approval; allow up to two weeks for production and 30 days from approval before reporting non-delivery.
  • You can ask about a slow case only after the case inquiry date, which is based on the 93% completion time.
  • Expedite requests need evidence of more than the need to work.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my H4 EAD status?

Enter the receipt number from your Form I-797C (three letters and ten digits) in Case Status Online at egov.uscis.gov, or add the case to a USCIS online account. If you filed an I-539 with the I-765, check both receipt numbers.

What does 'new card is being produced' mean for H4 EAD?

It means USCIS approved the Form I-765 and is printing the card. USCIS says the EAD should be produced within two weeks of approval and is sent by USPS Priority Mail, with the tracking number shown in Case Status Online.

Is there an official H4 EAD tracker?

The only official tools are USCIS Case Status Online, the USCIS online account and the processing times tool. Trackitt and Reddit timelines are self-reported by applicants; they give context but are unverified and not representative.

Does H4 EAD need biometrics in 2026?

It can. The I-765 instructions say USCIS may require biometrics at any time, and since December 2025 it reuses a prior photo only if it was taken at a biometrics appointment within 36 months. If you get an appointment notice, attend; missing it can lead to denial.

When can I contact USCIS about a delayed H4 EAD?

After your case inquiry date. Enter your receipt date in the USCIS processing times tool; it returns the date you may ask or a link to submit a question. The date is based on the time USCIS took to complete 93% of cases.

How do I make an H4 EAD expedite request?

Contact the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283, use the Emma chat, or send a secure message from your online account, then upload evidence. USCIS weighs criteria such as severe financial loss; the need to work, by itself, is not enough.

Why does my H4 EAD say 'case was transferred'?

USCIS moves files between offices to balance workload. A transfer is not a decision and needs no action from you. USCIS now reports H-4 EAD processing under Service Center Operations instead of a single service center.

How long does H4 EAD approval take after biometrics?

USCIS publishes no figure for that stage. Its posted time covers the whole case: 6.5 months for 80% of C26 cases filed with an I-539 and 17.5 months for standalone filings, as of October 14, 2026.
