Get Well Soon Messages
When someone you care about is sick, hurt or in the hospital, the right words do not have to be clever. They have to be kind, specific and easy to read on a bad day. These get well soon messages are written for real situations: a cold that knocked your coworker flat, a friend recovering from surgery, a grandparent in the hospital, a child with a cast, and a loved one facing a serious diagnosis where "get well soon" may not be the right phrase at all.
Below you will find heartfelt and short get well wishes, messages for after surgery and hospital stays, notes for injuries, gentle words for long-term illness, professional messages for a coworker or boss, playful notes for kids, funny cards, prayers for healing and a few short poems. Under the list is a practical guide: a simple formula for writing your own message, what not to say, when to text and when to send a card, and how to offer help people will actually accept.

How to write a get well message
Most good get well messages have three parts, and you can fit all of them into two or three sentences.
- Acknowledge what happened. Name it simply: "Sorry to hear about your surgery," "I heard you broke your wrist," "Thinking of you while you're in the hospital." You do not need details, and you should not ask for them.
- Send a warm, personal wish. One line that sounds like you: something you miss about them, a thing you will do together when they are better, or simple encouragement for the slow days.
- Close with support. Either a specific offer ("I can drive you to your appointment on Tuesday") or a release ("No need to reply"). Sick people get tired quickly, and not having to answer is a gift.
Worked examples
For a neighbor after knee surgery: "Heard the surgery went well, and I'm so glad. Our garden club misses you already. I'll bring your mail and paper in until you're walking again, so don't you dare try the porch steps." It names the event, adds a personal detail, and offers help that needs no planning on their part.
For a coworker out with the flu: "Sorry you're sick. Your clients are covered and nothing urgent is waiting, so please just rest. We miss you at standup." It removes the biggest worry a sick employee has, which is the pile of work.
Matching the message to the situation
| Situation | Tone | What helps most |
|---|---|---|
| Cold, flu, minor illness | Light, can be funny | A quick text, an offer to drop off soup or medicine |
| Planned surgery | Warm, encouraging | Wishes before and after, rides, meals during recovery |
| Hospital stay | Gentle, low pressure | A card or short message, asking before visiting |
| Injury or accident | Relieved, practical | Help with errands, driving, kids or pets |
| Serious or chronic illness | Steady, no forced cheer | Consistent check-ins over months, not one card |
| Coworker or boss | Polite, brief | Reassurance about work, a group card |
When "get well soon" is not the right phrase
For a cold or a broken arm, "get well soon" is perfect. For cancer, a progressive condition, a chronic illness or a terminal diagnosis, it can sting, because the person may not get well soon, or at all. In those cases, write about the present instead of the outcome: "Thinking of you," "I'm in your corner," "Sending you comfort and strength today." Avoid putting pressure on them to stay positive. Many people with serious illness say the most helpful friends were the ones who kept showing up without needing them to be brave.
What not to say
- "Everything happens for a reason." It can sound like the illness was deserved or necessary.
- "My aunt had the same thing and..." Other people's stories, especially sad ones, are rarely comforting. Keep the focus on them.
- Medical advice or miracle cures. Unless you are their doctor, skip the supplements, diets and articles.
- "At least..." "At least it's not worse" shrinks what they are going through.
- Questions about the diagnosis. Let them share what they want, when they want.
- "Let me know if you need anything." Kindly meant, but it hands them a task. A specific offer is far easier to say yes to.
Text, card, call or visit?
A text is fine for minor illness and for a first message when you have just heard the news. For surgery, a hospital stay, an injury that will take weeks to heal, or anything serious, a handwritten card means more: people keep them, reread them and often line them up on a windowsill. A call is welcome for close friends and family, but a text first ("Up for a call later, or would you rather rest?") is considerate.
Before visiting someone in the hospital or at home, always ask. Keep visits short, wash your hands, and stay away entirely if you have any symptoms yourself. If you want to send flowers to a hospital, call the unit first: some units, such as intensive care, do not allow flowers or plants, and many patients prefer something that does not need care, like a book, a puzzle, lip balm, cozy socks or a phone charger with a long cord.
Help people will actually accept
Sick people rarely ask for help, but they often say yes to something concrete. Instead of a general offer, pick one:
- Drop off a meal in a disposable container, or organize a meal train with friends.
- Drive them to appointments or pick up prescriptions.
- Walk the dog, mow the lawn, shovel the driveway or take out the trash cans.
- Pick up the kids from school or host them for an afternoon.
- Send a gift card for grocery or meal delivery if you live far away.
Following up
The first few days bring a rush of messages, then things go quiet while the recovery is still going on. A short note two or three weeks later ("Still thinking about you. How's the knee?") often means more than the first one. For long illnesses, put a reminder in your calendar and check in regularly, without expecting long replies.

Frequently asked questions
What do you write in a get well soon message?
Acknowledge what happened in a few words, add one warm personal line, and close with either a specific offer of help or a note that they don't need to reply. Two or three sentences is plenty.
What is a short get well soon message?
Simple lines work best: "Feel better soon. Thinking of you," "Rest up and heal well. We miss you," or "Hoping today is a little easier than yesterday." Short is fine as long as it sounds sincere.
What can I say instead of get well soon?
Try "Thinking of you," "Sending healing thoughts," "Rest up and take care of yourself," "Hoping each day gets a little easier," or "I'm in your corner." These also work for serious or chronic illness where recovery may not be quick.
Is it okay to text a get well message?
Yes, for minor illness and as a first message when you hear the news. For surgery, a hospital stay or a serious illness, follow up with a handwritten card or a call if you are close.
What should you not say to someone who is sick?
Avoid "everything happens for a reason," comparisons with other people's illnesses, unrequested medical advice, "at least" statements, and questions about their diagnosis. A vague "let me know if you need anything" is better replaced with a specific offer.
How do you write a get well message for someone with cancer?
Focus on the present rather than the outcome: say you are thinking of them, that you are there for the long haul, and offer specific help like rides or meals. Don't push them to stay positive and don't ask for updates.
Can I send flowers to someone in the hospital?
Call the hospital unit first, because some units, such as intensive care, do not allow flowers or plants. Small comfort items like a book, puzzle, cozy socks or a long phone charger are good alternatives.
