Thanksgiving Blessings
For many American families, Thanksgiving begins with bowed heads before anyone picks up a fork. A blessing gives words to the gratitude everyone at the table feels, and the same words travel well in a card, a text to a friend from church or a note to someone who needs encouragement.
Here are 70 original Thanksgiving blessings: short faith-filled wishes, table graces you can read aloud (several written for kids), blessings for family, friends and your church, words of comfort for a hard year and a handful of interfaith and spiritual blessings for mixed tables. Every one is original, so you can copy, print or read them freely.
More: all Thanksgiving wishes, Thanksgiving messages for texts and cards, wishes for family and, next month, religious Christmas wishes.

How to give a Thanksgiving blessing at the table
If you've been asked to say grace, relax: nobody expects a sermon. A good table blessing is short, sincere and inclusive of everyone in the room. Thirty seconds is plenty while the food is still hot.
- Address God simply. "Lord," "Heavenly Father," "Gracious God."
- Give thanks for the food and the hands that made it. Mention the cooks by name if you like; it always gets a smile.
- Give thanks for the people. Those at the table, those far away and, if it fits, those who are missed.
- Ask for one thing. Generous hearts, help for those in need, safe travel home.
- Close. "In Jesus' name, amen," or simply "Amen."
Example
"Lord, thank you for this meal and for Aunt Carol and Mike, who spent all morning in the kitchen. Thank you for every person at this table and for those we miss today, especially Grandpa. Give us grateful hearts and help us share what we have with those who have less. Amen." That's about twenty seconds.
Blessings for a mixed table
Many Thanksgiving tables include people of different faiths or none. A few ways to keep a blessing welcoming:
- Choose a short grace and keep it focused on gratitude, which everyone shares.
- Invite a moment of silence or "a moment to think of what we're thankful for" before or after the prayer.
- Go around the table and let each person name one thing they're grateful for. Kids love it, and it works for every belief.
- The interfaith section in the list above has blessings that mention gratitude and peace without specific religious language.
Letting kids say grace
Children often love being asked to bless the meal. Short rhyming graces are easy to memorize in a week. Give them a printed copy or practice it on the drive. If they want to add their own thanks, for the dog, for pie, for Grandma's visit, let them. It's usually the best part of the prayer.
Writing a blessing in a card
A blessing in a Thanksgiving card should still be personal. Pair a short faith line with something specific: "We thank God for your family and for every meal you brought us when the baby came. May the Lord bless your table this Thanksgiving." For a pastor, Sunday school teacher or church volunteer, name the way they served this year.
Scripture for Thanksgiving
Psalms of thanksgiving are a natural fit for the day; Psalm 100 and Psalm 107 are both well known for their call to give thanks, and 1 Thessalonians 5:18 speaks of giving thanks in all circumstances. If you include a reference in a card, write it out so the recipient can look it up, then add a sentence of your own.
When gratitude is hard
For someone who has lost a loved one, a job or their health this year, "count your blessings" can feel dismissive. A gentler blessing acknowledges the pain and prays for comfort and peace without asking them to feel thankful on command. The comfort section in the list has examples.
Blessings beyond the table
Thanksgiving blessings don't have to stay at dinner. Many churches and families use the week to serve: packing food boxes, volunteering at a shelter meal or inviting someone who would otherwise eat alone. A short blessing written on a card in a food box, or said with volunteers before serving, connects gratitude with generosity, which is what the day is about.
A family blessing tradition
Some families keep a gratitude journal or a "blessing tablecloth" that everyone signs each year with one thing they're thankful for. Others write blessings on slips of paper and read them aloud before dessert. Any of the short blessings above can start the tradition.
