What to Write in a Valentine's Day Card
A Valentine's card has very little room and a lot of pressure. Too short and it feels like an afterthought, too long and the handwriting runs off the edge. This page is built for exactly that space: card messages sized for the inside of a real card, grouped by who is opening it.
You will find messages for a partner you have loved for years, for someone you have been seeing for a few weeks, for friends, kids, parents and grandparents, and for the classroom and office card swap. After the list there are fill-in-the-blank formulas, a guide to how long to write, and sign-offs that match each relationship.

Valentine's card messages for your partner 12
Inside this card is everything I didn't manage to say out loud this year: thank you, I adore you, and I'm not going anywhere.
I like you, I love you, and I'd still swipe right a hundred times.
You're the best thing that happened to me this year and every year before it that we've been together.
You make the hard days lighter and the good days better. I hope you know how much that means.
To the guy who always lets me pick the movie and then falls asleep ten minutes in: I love you anyway. Maybe more because of it.
To the girl who turned my 'I'll just stay in tonight' into the best nights of my life: thank you. I'm crazy about you.
I'm not great with cards, so here's the short version: I'm really glad it's you.
My favorite memory this year is a simple one: you, me, that rainy afternoon, and absolutely nowhere to be. More of those, please.
Thank you for making me laugh until I snort, and loving me even after hearing it.
I wrote and erased this three times trying to make it perfect, then I realized you've never needed me to be perfect. You just want me, as is. So here I am, as is: grateful, a little nervous, and completely in love with you. Happy Valentine's Day.
Every love song makes sense now. Thanks for that.
I'd pick you in every lifetime, but this one is my favorite.
For a new relationship 9
We've only had a few months, but they've been my favorite few months in a long time.
Our first Valentine's Day. No pressure, just a card that says I really like you.
I'm so glad I said yes to that first coffee. Let's keep saying yes to things.
I'm trying to play it cool, but this card is my way of admitting I think about you a lot.
I don't know exactly where this is going, but I'm loving every step of the way there.
Thank you for making the getting-to-know-you part so easy. Can't wait to learn more.
You've already got a permanent spot in my favorite stories. Happy first Valentine's Day together.
I wasn't looking for anything when we met, which is probably why you surprised me so much. Thank you for being patient, funny and kind, and for texting back so fast that I stopped pretending I wasn't waiting. Here's to our first Valentine's Day and to whatever comes next.
A few dates in, and I already save my best stories for you.
For a husband or wife 11
To my wife: we've built a whole life out of Saturday mornings, school pickups and late-night talks. It's my favorite thing I've ever made.
To my husband: you're the steady one when I'm a whirlwind. I love our life and I love you.
Married all these years, and you still save me the good pillow. That's love.
Another year of mortgage payments, carpools and inside jokes. I'd sign up for all of it again.
You're still the most beautiful person in any room, including our very messy kitchen.
You're still the one I look for first in a crowd, and the one I want to go home with.
When we said 'I do,' I didn't know half of what I was promising. I didn't know about the sleepless nights with newborns, the job loss, or the year your mom was sick. I didn't know how strong we'd have to be. But I also didn't know how much joy was coming, or how much I'd grow to love you. I'd promise all of it again tomorrow.
Kids, bills and laundry may run our week, but you run my heart. Date night is on me.
Thank you for being my partner in parenting, in finances, and in deciding what's for dinner. Mostly that last one.
Our story is my favorite one, and I can't wait to read the next chapter with you.
I still have the napkin from our first dinner. Some things are worth keeping, and you're at the top of the list.
For friends (and Galentine's cards) 10

Happy Galentine's Day! Thanks for every pep talk, every road trip and every 'he's not worth it.'

Sending a little love your way today, because you deserve a Valentine who appreciates you. Consider this card your proof.

Happy Palentine's Day to my favorite person to text 'you up?' about absolutely nothing romantic.
Friendship like ours deserves a card too. Thanks for being my person on the hard days.

To my sister: we fought over the bathroom for 18 years and I'd still pick you as my sibling.
Bro, I'm required by Mom to send you this card. But also, you're pretty great.
I know Valentine's Day has been hard since Dad passed. Today I'm your Valentine, and I'm bringing dinner.

Here's a little something sweet for my sweetest grandchild. Love you bunches, Grandma and Grandpa.

You're sweet as a cupcake with extra frosting. Happy Valentine's Day, friend!
A simple formula for any Valentine's card
Most good card messages follow the same pattern: greeting + one specific thing + a wish or promise + sign-off. You don't need more than that.
- Greeting: their name or the nickname you actually use.
- One specific thing: "I love the way you...", "I still think about...", "This year you..."
- Wish or promise: "Here's to more...", "I can't wait to...", "I'll always..."
- Sign-off: matched to how close you are.
Fill-in-the-blank templates
- "[Name], I love the way you [habit]. Thank you for [something they did]. Here's to [plan or wish]."
- "This is our [first/fifth/twentieth] Valentine's Day, and my favorite memory so far is [memory]. Can't wait to make more."
- "I don't say it enough, but [honest sentence]. I love you."
- For a friend: "Happy Valentine's Day to my favorite [role: travel buddy, gym partner, 2 a.m. therapist]. Couldn't do [thing] without you."
Worked example
"Jen, I love the way you sing off-key in the car and refuse to apologize. Thank you for making this hard year feel lighter. Here's to that beach trip we keep talking about. All my love, Mark." That's four short lines and it could only have been written for one person.
How much to write
| Card type | Good length | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Classroom Valentines (kids) | A few words plus a name | Write every classmate's name if the school asks for cards for everyone |
| Office or friend card | One or two lines | Keep it friendly and clearly non-romantic |
| New relationship | Two or three sentences | Warm and specific, not a big declaration |
| Partner or spouse | A short paragraph | One memory and one look ahead |
| Anniversary-level card or letter | As long as you mean it | Use a blank card or add a folded letter inside |
If the card already has a long printed verse, keep your handwritten part short. The printed text sets the mood, your line makes it personal. A blank card is the opposite: it is all yours, so write a little more.
Sign-offs by relationship
- Partner or spouse: All my love, Yours always, Forever yours, Love you more, Your favorite person.
- New relationship: Love, Yours, With a big smile, Can't wait to see you.
- Friends: Love ya, Your favorite, Your partner in crime, XO.
- Family: Love always, With all our love, Hugs.
- Coworkers or classmates: Cheers, From, Have a sweet day, or just your name.
Kids' classroom Valentines
In many American elementary schools, kids exchange small cards with every classmate, often with a piece of candy or a sticker attached. Check the class list, write each child's name on the envelope, and let your child sign their own name if they can. Puns are the classic: animal puns, food puns and "you rock" style lines. Keep the messages identical in tone so no child feels left out, and check the school's rules on candy before you add any.
Cards for people far away
For a partner, parent or grandparent in another state, a mailed card is still a treat. Add a photo, a small drawing from the kids, or a pressed flower. Write the message as if you were sitting across from them, and mention a plan for the next visit.
Card mistakes worth skipping
- Just signing your name under the printed verse. Add at least one sentence of your own.
- Writing the message in a rush in the store parking lot. Draft it on your phone first.
- Mentioning an ex, a past fight or a joke that could be read the wrong way.
- Romantic language in a card for a coworker, a friend's partner, or someone you barely know.
- Forgetting to mail long-distance cards early. Allow at least a week for the card to cross the country.

Frequently asked questions
What do you write in a Valentine's card for your boyfriend or girlfriend?
Use their name, mention one thing you love about them or a recent memory, and end with something you are looking forward to together. Two to four sentences is plenty.
What should I write in a Valentine's card for my husband or wife?
Something only a spouse could write: a memory from your years together, thanks for something they do every day, and a line about the future. Sign off with your usual endearment.
What do you write in a Valentine's card when you just started dating?
Keep it light and genuine: say you have enjoyed getting to know them and you are glad they are in your life. Skip "forever" language for now.
What do you write in a kid's Valentine's card for classmates?
Short and friendly: "Happy Valentine's Day, Liam!" or a cute pun, plus your child's name. Many schools ask for a card for every child in the class.
How do you sign a Valentine's card?
"Love" works for partners and family. "All my love" or "Forever yours" is more romantic. For friends try "Love ya" or "XO"; for coworkers just your name or "Cheers."
What do I write in a Valentine's card for a friend?
Thank them for something specific, add a joke or shared memory, and keep romance out of it. "Happy Galentine's Day" is a fun option for close girlfriends.
Is a short Valentine's card message okay?
Yes, as long as it is personal. One honest sentence in your own handwriting is better than a long verse you didn't write.
