What to Write in a Christmas Card

75 wishes · updated October 14, 2026

You have the stack of cards, the stamps and a good pen. Then you open the first card and stare at the blank space under the printed greeting. This page is for that moment. It has 80 original Christmas card messages sized for the inside of a card: two or three sentences you can copy as they are or finish with one personal detail.

Messages are grouped by who the card is for: family, friends, a partner, neighbors, teachers and the people who help you all year, coworkers and clients, plus faith-filled lines, closing lines for family photo cards and messages for cards that will arrive late. Below the list is a fill-in-the-blank formula, sign-off ideas and answers to the etiquette questions everyone has in December.

For longer messages and texts, see the main Christmas wishes page, or go straight to wishes for family, for friends and for coworkers.

A simple formula for any Christmas card

A card doesn't need a paragraph. Most of the best ones follow the same four steps and fit in three sentences.

StepWhat it doesExample
GreetingUses the name they actually go byDear Aunt Carol,
One specific lineNames a moment, tradition or qualityYour Christmas Eve chili is still the best thing I eat all year.
A wish that fitsWishes them something realI hope this year you get to sit down while someone else does the dishes.
Close and signWarm sign-off plus your nameLove you lots, Jenna, Mike and the boys

If you can't think of a moment, write about a quality: their patience, their laugh, the way they make everyone feel welcome. Then give one small example of it.

What to write depending on who it's for

Family

Family cards can be the most personal ones in the stack. Mention a shared tradition, a recipe or something they did for you this year. If you're sending one card to a household, name everyone in it, including the kids and, if you know them, the pets.

Friends

Friends will forgive a joke, but one sincere sentence makes the card worth keeping. "We need to stop saying 'let's get together soon' and actually do it" is honest and gives you a reason to call in January.

Neighbors, teachers and service people

For the mail carrier, the bus driver, a teacher or the neighbor who watches your house, a card is mostly a thank-you. Name what they do: "Thank you for keeping track of our packages all year." A gift card or a small treat is a common add-on but never required.

Coworkers and clients

Keep it short, inclusive and grateful for something concrete. "Happy holidays" or "Season's greetings" are the safe default when you don't know someone's traditions. Sign with your full name, and in a company card, add your role if the client knows several people at the firm.

How to sign a Christmas card

  • Close family and friends: Love, Lots of love, Hugs, With all our love.
  • Neighbors and acquaintances: Warmly, Warm wishes, Merry Christmas from.
  • Work: Best wishes, Warm regards, Happy holidays from.
  • Couples and families: list the names in the order people know you, or use "The Garcias" on the envelope and first names inside. Writing the kids' names makes a family card feel less like a form letter.

If several people sign the same card, let each person add their own short line rather than one long message signed by everyone.

Photo cards and holiday letters

Printed photo cards often have only a printed greeting. Add a handwritten line on the back or the front, even just "Miss you guys! Lunch in January?" It turns a mass mailing into a personal one. A holiday letter tucked inside can share the year's news, but keep it to one page, focus on a few highlights and end with a question or a line about the reader.

Timing and practical tips

  • Mail domestic cards in the first half of December. Mail slows down in the last two weeks before Christmas, and international or military mail needs even more time. The Postal Service publishes recommended holiday mailing dates every year.
  • Draft your message on your phone first, especially for long lists, so you don't run out of space or cross things out.
  • Write in dark ink; glittery and light pens look nice but can be hard to read.
  • Late? A card that arrives between Christmas and New Year's Day is still welcome. Write a combined Christmas and New Year message and skip the long apology.
  • Keep an address list with notes on who sent you a card, new babies, moves and names to spell carefully. Next December will be much easier.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What do you write in a Christmas card?

Write a greeting with their name, one specific line about them or your year together, a short wish and a warm sign-off. Example: 'Dear Tom, thanks for all the Saturday morning runs this year. Have a restful, delicious Christmas. Warmly, Ana.'

What is a short Christmas card message?

Two short sentences are enough: 'Thinking of you this Christmas and grateful for your friendship. Have a wonderful holiday.' Add one personal detail if you have room.

How do you sign a Christmas card from a family?

Sign with all first names, for example 'Love, Jenna, Mike, Ava and Leo,' or 'Love from the Parkers' if the recipient doesn't know everyone. Adding the kids' names makes the card feel more personal.

What do you write in a Christmas card for a coworker?

Keep it short and inclusive: thank them for something concrete and wish them a restful break. 'Thanks for always having my back on deadlines. Happy holidays and enjoy the time off!'

What should you write in a religious Christmas card?

Mention the birth of Christ, peace or God's blessing, and add a personal line: 'Praying that the peace of Christ fills your home this Christmas. We're grateful for your friendship.'

When should Christmas cards be mailed?

Within the US, mail cards in the first half of December. Send international and military cards by early December. Check the Postal Service's recommended holiday mailing dates each year.

Is it okay to send a Christmas card late?

Yes. A card that arrives before New Year's Day is still very welcome. Combine Christmas and New Year wishes in one message and keep any apology to a few words.
