Christmas Wishes for Coworkers
Work holiday messages walk a fine line: warm enough to mean something, professional enough for a shared inbox, and inclusive enough for a team that celebrates in different ways or not at all. These 56 Christmas wishes for coworkers are written for exactly that: a card signed by the team, a Slack message before everyone logs off, a note to your boss, a thank-you to your employees and a year-end email to clients.
There's a full section of Happy Holidays messages that work for everyone, whatever they celebrate, plus a few light, office-safe jokes. Below the list you'll find what to write, when to send it and how to keep it inclusive.

What to write to coworkers at Christmas
The best work holiday messages are short and concrete. Thank people for something real they did this year, wish them a restful break, and look forward to the new year. Three sentences is plenty.
- A specific thank-you. "Thanks for covering my accounts in October" beats "thanks for everything."
- A holiday wish. Rest, time with family, a real break from email.
- A look ahead. "See you in January" or "excited for what we'll build next year."
Worked example
"Priya, thank you for jumping in on the launch when the timeline fell apart in September. I don't think we'd have made it without you. Have a wonderful, phone-free break, and see you in January." It's specific, warm and completely office-appropriate.
Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays at work?
For a whole team, a company card or a client list, Happy holidays or Season's greetings is the safer choice, because it includes colleagues who celebrate Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or nothing in particular. Save Merry Christmas for coworkers you know celebrate it. Religious wording is best kept out of work messages unless you know the person shares your faith.
Messages by audience
| Audience | Tone | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Whole team | Warm, appreciative, inclusive | Mention a shared win from the year |
| A close coworker | Personal, can be playful | An inside joke from work is fine |
| Your boss | Grateful, respectful, not flattering | Thank them for something they actually did |
| Your employees | Generous, specific, no work requests | Tell them to truly log off |
| Clients and partners | Formal, brief, inclusive | Sign with your name and company |
When and how to send it
- Timing: during the last working days before people leave for the holidays, not on December 25. Many teams thin out the week before Christmas, so earlier is better.
- Email subject line: make it obviously not a work request: "Happy holidays from the team" or "Thank you, and enjoy the break."
- Team chat: one message in the team channel is great; a personal direct message to the people you worked with most is even better.
- Office card: if the whole team signs a card for someone, add a short line, not just your name.
- Client cards: printed company cards feel much warmer with a handwritten line and a real signature.
What to avoid
- Jokes about someone's appearance, age, drinking or performance.
- Promises about bonuses or raises in a holiday message.
- Asking for anything work-related in the same email.
- Reply-all chains. If someone sends a team-wide greeting, reply to the sender only.
- Overly romantic or personal wording; "love" and "hugs" are best kept for close work friends.
For managers: thanking your team
A holiday note from a manager is one of the few messages employees reliably read twice. Name what the team accomplished, thank people individually if the team is small, and say clearly that you don't expect anyone to check email over the break, then don't send any. If you give a gift card or a small gift, the note matters as much as the gift.
Signing a group card for a coworker
When a card goes around the office, the temptation is to write "Happy holidays!" and pass it on. Take thirty seconds more. Mention one thing you worked on together or one thing you like about the person: "Thanks for always explaining the reporting system without sighing" or "Your Friday playlists are the best thing about this floor." If you barely know the person, a friendly, specific wish works: "Hope you get to sleep in every single day of the break." Sign with your first and last name in larger offices, so the person knows exactly who wrote what. Keep the space fair, too; a long paragraph that fills half the card leaves nothing for the rest of the team.
