Is Mercury in retrograde right now? Not yet. As of October 14, 2026, Mercury is still moving forward (direct), but it entered what astrologers call its pre-retrograde shadow on October 4. The third and final Mercury retrograde of 2026 begins on Saturday, October 24, at 3:12 a.m. ET, at 20°58' Scorpio, and ends when Mercury stations direct on Friday, November 13, at 10:53 a.m. ET, at 5°02' Scorpio. The post-retrograde shadow runs until November 30. Astronomically, nothing about the planet actually reverses: retrograde is an apparent backward drift that happens because Earth and Mercury are moving at different speeds around the sun.
Below you will find every 2026 Mercury retrograde with exact station times and shadow periods, the 2027 dates, what the term means in astronomy, what astrologers associate with it sign by sign, and where tradition ends and evidence begins. All dates were calculated from a planetary ephemeris and cross-checked against published astrological calendars; times are Eastern (EDT before November 1, EST after).
Mercury retrograde 2026 dates at a glance
Mercury turned retrograde three times in 2026, and all three periods fall in water signs: Pisces in late winter, Cancer in summer and Scorpio in the fall. Each period lasts a little over three weeks.
| 2026 retrograde | Pre-shadow begins | Mercury stations retrograde (ET) | Mercury stations direct (ET) | Post-shadow ends | Sign |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| First (winter) | Feb. 11 | Thu., Feb. 26, 1:48 a.m. EST, 22°33' Pisces | Fri., March 20, 3:32 p.m. EDT, 8°29' Pisces | April 9 | Pisces |
| Second (summer) | June 12 | Mon., June 29, 1:35 p.m. EDT, 26°15' Cancer | Thu., July 23, 6:57 p.m. EDT, 16°18' Cancer | Aug. 6 | Cancer |
| Third (fall) | Oct. 4 | Sat., Oct. 24, 3:12 a.m. EDT, 20°58' Scorpio | Fri., Nov. 13, 10:53 a.m. EST, 5°02' Scorpio | Nov. 30 | Scorpio |
Why some websites list the first retrograde as starting February 25: the station happened at 1:48 a.m. Eastern on February 26, which was still 10:48 p.m. on February 25 on the West Coast. The same thing can shift a date by one day for any station that falls close to midnight, so always check which time zone a calendar uses. Station times can also differ by a minute or two between ephemerides, which matters to no one except people timing a chart to the minute.
Where we are now: the fall 2026 retrograde, step by step
- October 4 to October 24 (pre-shadow): Mercury moves forward through 5° to 21° of Scorpio, the stretch of sky it will later retrace. Astrologers treat this as the warm-up period, when issues that will be "reviewed" during the retrograde first surface.
- October 24, 3:12 a.m. ET (station retrograde): Mercury appears to stand still at 20°58' Scorpio, then begins its apparent backward drift.
- November 4, 9:24 a.m. EST (inferior conjunction): Mercury passes between Earth and the sun. This is the midpoint of the retrograde and the moment the planet is closest to us. Some astrologers call it the "heart" of the retrograde.
- November 13, 10:53 a.m. ET (station direct): Mercury pauses at 5°02' Scorpio and resumes its normal eastward motion.
- November 13 to November 30 (post-shadow): Mercury moves back over the same degrees and clears 20°58' Scorpio on November 30, which astrologers consider the true end of the cycle.
The fall retrograde overlaps with a Venus retrograde. By the same ephemeris, Venus stationed retrograde on October 3 at 8°29' Scorpio and stations direct on the evening of November 13 at 22°51' Libra, only hours after Mercury does. Astrologers tend to treat that double station as a notable date for relationships and money. If you follow lunar dates too, the November full moon is covered in our Beaver Moon guide.

What Mercury retrograde actually is
"Retrograde" is an astronomy term before it is an astrology term. Night after night, planets drift eastward against the background stars. That forward drift is called prograde or direct motion. For a few weeks at a time, a planet appears to slow down, stop and move westward instead. That is retrograde motion.
NASA's StarChild explainer puts it plainly: retrograde motion is an apparent change in the movement of a planet through the sky, and the planet does not physically start moving backward in its orbit. It only looks that way because of the relative positions and speeds of the planet and Earth as both circle the sun.
For Mercury, the effect comes from the fact that it is the fastest planet. It completes an orbit in about 88 Earth days, according to NASA's Mercury fact sheet, so it repeatedly laps Earth on the inside track. When Mercury swings around the near side of its orbit, between Earth and the sun, its sideways motion as seen from Earth runs opposite to its usual direction across the sky. A familiar analogy is passing a slower car on the highway: for a moment, the other car seems to slide backward relative to you, even though both of you are moving forward.
How often does Mercury go retrograde, and how long does it last?
- Frequency: Mercury's synodic period, the time between one alignment with Earth and the sun and the next, is 115.88 days (NASA). That is why Mercury goes retrograde roughly every 116 days, three times in most calendar years. Some years catch a piece of a fourth period; 2023, for example, had retrogrades starting in late December 2022, April, August and December.
- Length: Each retrograde lasts about three weeks. Across 98 retrograde periods from 2000 to 2030, our ephemeris calculation found the shortest at about 20 days and the longest at about 24 days, with an average of about 22.
- Share of the year: Three periods of roughly 22 days add up to about 66 days, so Mercury appears retrograde close to 18% of the time. Add the shadow periods and astrologers effectively flag well over a third of the calendar.
- Visibility: During retrograde, Mercury is near inferior conjunction, lost in the sun's glare, so you cannot watch it "go backward" with your own eyes during the middle of the period.
What is the Mercury retrograde shadow period?
The shadow is an astrological concept, not an astronomical event. Before a retrograde starts, Mercury travels forward over the exact degrees it will later retrace. The pre-shadow begins when Mercury first reaches the degree where it will eventually station direct; the post-shadow ends when Mercury finally passes the degree where it stationed retrograde. In 2026, the shadows ran roughly two to three weeks on each side: February 11 to April 9 for the first cycle, June 12 to August 6 for the second, and October 4 to November 30 for the third. Astrologers who use shadows describe the pre-shadow as a preview and the post-shadow as a cleanup phase.
Mercury retrograde 2027 dates
Planning a launch, a wedding or a move for next year? These are the 2027 stations, calculated the same way. Unlike 2026, all three 2027 retrogrades start in one sign and back into the previous one.
| 2027 retrograde | Pre-shadow begins | Stations retrograde (ET) | Stations direct (ET) | Post-shadow ends | Signs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| First | Jan. 25 | Tue., Feb. 9, 12:36 p.m. EST, 5°58' Pisces | Wed., March 3, 7:32 a.m. EST, 20°55' Aquarius | March 23 | Pisces, back into Aquarius on Feb. 18 |
| Second | May 26 | Thu., June 10, 2:15 p.m. EDT, 6°21' Cancer | Sun., July 4, 3:39 p.m. EDT, 27°28' Gemini | July 19 | Cancer, back into Gemini on June 26 |
| Third | Sept. 17 | Thu., Oct. 7, 10:37 a.m. EDT, 4°55' Scorpio | Thu., Oct. 28, 10:10 a.m. EDT, 19°18' Libra | Nov. 13 | Scorpio, back into Libra on Oct. 16 |
Note the second 2027 retrograde ends on the Fourth of July, which may interest anyone who schedules travel around Mercury.
What Mercury retrograde means in astrology
In Western astrology, Mercury is the planet of communication, thinking, information, contracts, short trips, commerce and the devices we use to stay in touch. It rules Gemini and Virgo. When the planet appears to move backward, astrologers read it as a time when those areas slow down, double back or go sideways: emails go astray, plans get revised, old contacts reappear and decisions made in haste have to be revisited.
Most working astrologers today frame the period less as a curse and more as a "re" season: review, revise, repair, reconnect, reconsider. The pre-shadow is said to raise an issue, the retrograde to complicate or reopen it and the post-shadow to resolve it. The sign Mercury travels through colors the theme. Scorpio, the sign of the fall 2026 retrograde, is associated in astrology with secrets, shared money, debts, intimacy and power, so astrologers have been describing this cycle as one for uncovering hidden information and renegotiating joint finances.
Astrologers do not all use the same zodiac. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons, which places the fall 2026 retrograde in Scorpio. Vedic (sidereal) astrology uses a zodiac tied to the constellations, which runs roughly 24 degrees behind, so Vedic calendars place the same retrograde in Libra. The astronomy is identical; only the labeling differs.
Mercury retrograde 2026 signs affected
Searches for "signs affected" spike before every retrograde. The honest answer from within astrology is that everyone is said to feel it, but astrologers usually single out three groups: Gemini and Virgo, the two signs Mercury rules; the sign the retrograde occurs in (Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio in 2026); and the signs that sit in tense or harmonious angles to it. For the fall 2026 retrograde in Scorpio, that means Scorpio itself, plus fellow fixed signs Taurus, Leo and Aquarius, are the ones most often named.
Horoscope writers then translate the retrograde into a "house," or area of life, for each sun or rising sign. Here is how the October 24 to November 13 retrograde in Scorpio maps onto the whole-sign houses most columnists use.
| Sun or rising sign | House Scorpio occupies | What astrologers tell this sign to review |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 8th | Shared money, loans, taxes, insurance, intimacy |
| Taurus | 7th | Partnerships, contracts, a spouse or business partner |
| Gemini | 6th | Daily routine, workload, health habits, coworkers |
| Cancer | 5th | Romance, creative projects, children, an old flame |
| Leo | 4th | Home, family, repairs, a move |
| Virgo | 3rd | Conversations, siblings, neighbors, local travel, cars |
| Libra | 2nd | Income, spending, possessions, self-worth |
| Scorpio | 1st | Personal image, health, how you present yourself |
| Sagittarius | 12th | Rest, private worries, things kept behind the scenes |
| Capricorn | 11th | Friends, groups, networking, long-term goals |
| Aquarius | 10th | Career, reputation, a boss or public role |
| Pisces | 9th | Long-distance travel, school, legal matters, beliefs |
The earlier 2026 retrogrades work the same way. The Pisces retrograde of February and March fell four houses after the one listed above (for example, Aries' 12th house, Taurus' 11th), and the Cancer retrograde of June and July fell four houses before it (Aries' 4th, Taurus' 3rd and so on). Astrologers who read charts individually look at where 21° to 5° Scorpio falls in the full birth chart rather than at the sun sign alone.

Do and don't during Mercury retrograde, as astrologers frame it
The lists below summarize the advice that circulates in mainstream astrology columns. They are tradition, not evidence-based rules, but several items are simply good habits that cost nothing.
What astrologers suggest doing
- Back up your phone and computer, and update passwords before the station date.
- Reread contracts, leases and offers carefully; ask questions before signing.
- Confirm travel details twice: flight times, reservations, pickup addresses.
- Finish, edit and revisit projects already in progress rather than starting new ones.
- Reconnect with old friends, return calls, clear your inbox and resolve misunderstandings.
- Build extra time into schedules for delays.
What astrologers suggest avoiding
- Signing major contracts or making large purchases, especially electronics and cars, during the retrograde itself.
- Launching a business, website or product on a station day.
- Sending emotionally charged texts or emails without rereading them.
- Making snap decisions about relationships or jobs.
If life does not allow waiting, astrologers generally say to proceed with extra care, read the fine print and leave room to revise. No reputable practitioner suggests skipping medical appointments, legal deadlines or work obligations because of a retrograde.
Mercury retrograde myths vs. what science says
Mercury retrograde has become shorthand for anything going wrong, so it is worth separating what is known from what is believed.
| Claim | What is actually known |
|---|---|
| Mercury moves backward in its orbit. | False. The motion is apparent, caused by Earth and Mercury moving at different speeds (NASA). |
| Retrograde Mercury exerts a physical force that disrupts electronics. | No known mechanism. Mercury is closest to Earth near the middle of retrograde, but its gravitational and magnetic influence on Earth is negligible, and nothing about apparent motion changes physics. |
| Flights, phones and computers fail more often during retrograde. | No published study has shown this. People tend to notice and remember mishaps that fit an expectation (confirmation bias). |
| Astrology reliably describes personality and events. | Controlled tests have not supported it. In a double-blind study published in Nature in 1985, astrologers could not match birth charts to personality profiles better than chance. A 2008 study in the Journal of General Psychology found college students could pick out their real personality-test profile but not their real astrological summary. |
| Retrograde is a rare event. | It happens three times in most years and covers close to a fifth of the calendar, more with shadows. |
That does not mean Mercury retrograde is meaningless to the people who follow it. For many, it works as a ritual reminder to slow down, double-check and communicate carefully, which can be useful whatever its cause. Treat it as a cultural calendar, not a forecast. If you notice that a retrograde reliably sends your anxiety up, that is a cue to look at the worry itself rather than the sky; persistent anxiety is worth bringing to a doctor or counselor.
Mercury retrograde, in context
Other astrology terms that trend alongside Mercury retrograde work on very different time scales. Mercury cycles every few months; Saturn takes about 29.4 years to orbit the sun, which is the basis of the Saturn return in your late 20s. And if this season has you reading about other signs and omens, from the evil eye to ringing in your left ear, we cover each one with the same approach: what the tradition says, and what is actually known.

How these dates were calculated
Station times, shadow degrees and sign ingresses in this guide were computed with the Swiss Ephemeris, a standard astronomical ephemeris library, for geocentric positions in the tropical zodiac, then converted to Eastern Time. The fall 2026 station times match those published by CHANI to the minute, and the 2026 retrograde windows match The Old Farmer's Almanac. If a source you use lists a date one day off, the cause is almost always a different time zone. This page will be updated if any 2027 date needs correction.
Frequently asked questions
Is Mercury in retrograde right now?
No. As of October 14, 2026, Mercury is moving direct but is in its pre-retrograde shadow, which began October 4. The retrograde itself starts October 24 at 3:12 a.m. ET and ends November 13 at 10:53 a.m. ET.
When does Mercury retrograde end in 2026?
The last 2026 retrograde ends when Mercury stations direct on Friday, November 13, at 10:53 a.m. ET. Astrologers who track shadow periods consider the cycle complete on November 30, when Mercury passes 20°58' Scorpio again.
How many times is Mercury retrograde in 2026?
Three: February 26 to March 20 in Pisces, June 29 to July 23 in Cancer, and October 24 to November 13 in Scorpio.
What does it mean when Mercury is in retrograde?
Astronomically, Mercury appears to move backward against the stars because it is overtaking Earth on the inside of its orbit; it never actually reverses. In astrology, the period is associated with miscommunication, travel snags, tech problems and revisiting the past.
What is the Mercury retrograde shadow period in 2026?
For the fall retrograde, the pre-shadow runs October 4 to October 24 and the post-shadow runs November 13 to November 30. Earlier shadows were February 11 to April 9 and June 12 to August 6, measured from start of pre-shadow to end of post-shadow.
Which signs are most affected by Mercury retrograde in 2026?
Astrologers usually name Gemini and Virgo, which Mercury rules, plus the sign the retrograde occurs in. All three 2026 retrogrades were in water signs, so Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio get extra attention; for the fall cycle, Taurus, Leo and Aquarius are often added.
When is the next Mercury retrograde after November 2026?
February 9, 2027, at 12:36 p.m. EST, in Pisces. It stations direct March 3, 2027, in Aquarius. The other 2027 retrogrades run June 10 to July 4 and October 7 to October 28.
Is there scientific evidence that Mercury retrograde affects people?
No. There is no known physical mechanism and no published study showing more accidents, breakups or tech failures during retrograde. Controlled tests of astrology, including a 1985 double-blind study in Nature, have not found predictive power.
