Hanukkah Wishes
Hanukkah, the eight-night Festival of Lights, remembers the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem and the small jar of oil that, as tradition tells it, burned for eight days. It's a holiday of candles in the window, latkes and jelly donuts, dreidel games, and a lot of family time, and a few warm words in a card or text fit right in.
In 2026, Hanukkah begins at sundown on Friday, December 4, when the first candle is lit, and ends at nightfall on Saturday, December 12. Below you'll find Hanukkah wishes for parents, grandparents, kids, friends, partners, and coworkers, plus messages for interfaith families, traditional Chanukah greetings with Hebrew phrases explained, and quick texts.

Hanukkah wishes for family 17
Mom and Dad, I still remember standing on a chair to reach the menorah while you held my hand steady. Thank you for every one of those nights. Happy Hanukkah, I love you both.
To my sister, who's been stealing the crispiest latke off my plate since we were kids: this year I'm letting you have it. Happy Hanukkah, I love you.
Grandma, nobody grates potatoes with as much love as you do. I can't wait to sit in your kitchen, hear the old stories again, and burn my tongue on the first batch.
Eight nights, one menorah, and you next to me on the couch. That's my whole wish list. Happy Hanukkah, my love.
Hey buddy, I've been practicing my dreidel spin all year. Your gelt stash is officially in danger. Happy Hanukkah!
Every year we squeeze around the same table, a little older and a lot louder. That's the miracle I count on. Happy Hanukkah to all of us.
Brother, I'm hiding the jelly donuts this year, so don't even try. Kidding. Mostly. Happy Hanukkah!
Your house has always been where the candles get lit a little earlier and the latkes run out a little later. Thank you for hosting us again. Happy Hanukkah!
Grandpa, you taught me the blessings before I could read them. Every time I light the candles, I hear your voice. Chag Sameach.
You light up more than candles in this house. Thank you for making our home this warm all year, not just for eight nights. Happy Hanukkah, sweetheart.
Watching you place the candles yourself this year, so careful and so proud, I nearly cried into the applesauce. Happy Hanukkah, my girl.
Cousin, dreidel rematch on night three. Loser scrubs the latke pan. Happy Hanukkah!
Thinking of you as the candles go up tonight. I hope your eight nights bring good food, good health, and long phone calls with the people you love.
The Maccabees were a small group who refused to give up who they were. I hope you always find that same courage. Happy Hanukkah, kiddo.
Eight nights of presents, a mountain of fried food, and an aunt who doesn't believe in bedtimes during the holidays. Can't wait to see you!
We'll light our candles at the same time as you tonight, even with three states between us. Happy Hanukkah, Grandma and Grandpa. We'll call right after.
As the sun sets and you light the first candle, I want you to know how much you mean to me. The story of Hanukkah is about resilience and hope, about a small amount of oil that lasted far longer than anyone thought it could. You've been that kind of light in my life: steady, quiet, and always there when things got dark. I hope these eight nights fill your home with the smell of latkes, the sound of laughter, and the people who love you most. Happy Hanukkah to you and your whole beautiful family.

How to write a Hanukkah message
A good Hanukkah card doesn't need to be long. Most warm messages have three parts:
- A greeting. "Happy Hanukkah" is the most common. "Chag Sameach" (Hebrew for "happy holiday") and "Chag Urim Sameach" ("happy Festival of Lights") work well for friends and family who use Hebrew.
- One specific detail. The candles, Grandma's latkes, the dreidel rivalry, the first Hanukkah with a new baby, the party they host every year.
- A wish. Peace, warmth, health, light, a cozy eight nights.
Example: "Happy Hanukkah! I hope the candles glow bright tonight and your latkes come out extra crispy. Thinking of you all eight nights. Love, Dana."
Hanukkah 2026 dates and timing
Hanukkah follows the Hebrew calendar, so its date on the regular calendar moves every year, usually landing between late November and late December. In 2026, the first candle is lit after sundown on Friday, December 4, and the last (eighth) candle on Friday, December 11. The holiday ends at nightfall on Saturday, December 12.
- Cards: mail them about a week ahead so they arrive before the first night. A card that shows up on night three is still welcome.
- Texts and emails: any of the eight days work. The afternoon before the first candle is a nice touch.
- Fridays: because both the first and last candle nights in 2026 fall on Friday, observant families light Hanukkah candles before the Shabbat candles and may be offline from sundown Friday until Saturday night. Send messages earlier in the day.
- Work: Hanukkah isn't a holiday that stops work, so most people are at their jobs during the eight days. Don't assume your coworker has time off.
Spelling and words you'll see
Hanukkah and Chanukah are both correct English spellings of the same Hebrew word, which means "dedication." Other words that show up in cards:
| Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Menorah / hanukkiah | The candelabra. A Hanukkah menorah, also called a hanukkiah, holds nine candles: eight for the nights plus the shamash. |
| Shamash | The "helper" candle used to light the others. |
| Latkes | Fried potato pancakes, often served with applesauce or sour cream. |
| Sufganiyot | Jelly donuts (singular: sufganiyah). |
| Dreidel and gelt | A four-sided spinning top and the chocolate coins (or real coins) kids play for. |
What to avoid
- Calling it "Jewish Christmas." Hanukkah is its own holiday with its own history, and it usually falls weeks away from December 25.
- Making it all about presents. Gifts are common, especially for kids, but the heart of the holiday is the candles, the story, and family.
- Quoting Hebrew prayers you're not sure about. If you're not Jewish, "Happy Hanukkah" is perfect. Half a blessing copied from the internet can come out wrong.
- Assuming everyone celebrates. In a workplace email to a mixed group, "Happy Hanukkah to everyone celebrating" is friendly and accurate.
Interfaith families
Many American families celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas. Follow their lead: if they talk about both, a card that says "Happy Hanukkah and merry Christmas" is welcome. If you're not sure, a Hanukkah message sent during Hanukkah and a separate holiday card later is the safest choice.
Adapting your message
| Where | Tone | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Greeting card | Warm, a few sentences | "Wishing you eight bright nights with the people you love. Thank you for always making our family part of yours." |
| Text | Quick and casual | "Happy Hanukkah! Eat a latke for me tonight." |
| Work email | Polite and brief | "Wishing you and your family a happy Hanukkah and a peaceful Festival of Lights." |
| Social media | Broad and festive | "Chag Sameach to everyone lighting candles tonight!" |

Frequently asked questions
What is the proper greeting for Hanukkah?
"Happy Hanukkah" is the most common greeting and is right for anyone. You can also say "Chag Sameach," Hebrew for "happy holiday," or "Chag Urim Sameach," which means "happy Festival of Lights."
When is Hanukkah 2026?
Hanukkah 2026 begins at sundown on Friday, December 4, when the first candle is lit, and ends at nightfall on Saturday, December 12. The eighth candle is lit on the evening of Friday, December 11.
Is it Hanukkah or Chanukah?
Both are correct. The name is transliterated from Hebrew, so there are several English spellings. Hanukkah and Chanukah are the two most common, and the word means "dedication."
When should I send Hanukkah cards?
Mail cards about a week before the first night so they arrive by December 4, 2026. Texts and emails can go any time during the eight nights.
Can I say Happy Holidays instead of Happy Hanukkah?
Yes, "Happy Holidays" is polite and inclusive. If you know someone celebrates Hanukkah, though, a specific Hanukkah wish feels more personal.
What do you write in a Hanukkah card for an interfaith family?
Follow the family's lead. If they celebrate both holidays, "Happy Hanukkah and merry Christmas" works well. You can also focus on what both share: light, family, and time together.
Do people get time off for Hanukkah?
Usually not. Unlike Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur, Hanukkah doesn't restrict work, so most people go to work as usual and celebrate in the evenings.
